Tests only get tougher for rook Tippmann

- By JARED SCHWARTZ jschwartz@nypost.com

Joe Tippmann’s indoctrination to the Jets’ offensive line is about to speed up in a hurry.

The rookie, whom the Jets drafted in the second round, made his offensive debut (he had played some special teams snaps previously) in the Week 3 loss to the Patriots. He started at right guard as the Jets reconfigured their offensive line with Duane Brown on injured reserve.

Tippmann, who was drafted with the expectation to be the team’s long-term center after playing almost exclusively there at Wisconsin, performed admirably at the new position in what was an otherwise dreary Jets showing. He was particularly strong in pass protection, not allowing a single quarterback pressure or sack on 42 pass block snaps, according to Pro Football Focus. PFF gave him an impressive 85.8 pass blocking grade, which was second-highest in the league among guards, behind only stud Colts guard Quenton Nelson. Tippmann’s run-blocking was graded at 70.4, 15th-highest among all guards.

“When you’re playing center, you know what the guards are going to be doing, it’s kind of how to do it,” Tippmann told The Post after practice on Wednesday. “That’s the first adjustment I had to make — taking the right steps. Everything happens a little slower when you’re at guard. When you’re at center, you’re playing and you take your first step in the ground and that guy is in your face already. …

“My goal was to go out there and cut it loose, and that’s what I felt I did.”

Tippmann’s second test will occur against the far-superior Chiefs’ defensive line. That means star defensive tackle Chris Jones, who often rotates along the line and will likely go up against Tippmann plenty.

➤ Patrick Mahomes doesn’t forget much.

When asked about the Jets’ secondary, the Chiefs’ superstar quarterback unpromptedly mentioned D.J. Reed, who he still remembers intercepting him and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown when he was playing at Texas Tech against Reed’s Kansas State in 2016.

“I don’t throw a lot of pick-sixes, and he had a pick-six. You remember it,” Mahomes told reporters. “He’s a great player. That’s route recognition, that’s jumping the ball, making a play, that’s stuff you really have to be aware of.”

➤ Mekhi Becton, Breece Hall, Micheal Clemons and Greg Zuerlein were full participants in practice and are expected to be available on Sunday.

Tony Adams and Wes Schweitzer were limited with a hamstring injury and concussion, respectively.
