Trouba ready to go after Wilson’s hard hit

- By MOLLIE WALKER

Jacob Trouba participated in the Rangers’ practice Thursday afternoon at MSG Training Center, assuring that the captain escaped serious injury after colliding with Capitals forward Tom Wilson in the club’s win the night before.

“All good,” he said before the Blueshirts boarded a plane to Florida, where the team will play the Panthers and Lightning back-toback on Friday and Saturday, respectively. “Just played it safe. [Possible concussion is] not something to mess with. Make sure you feel good in the morning and feel good skating.”

Reflecting on the penalty-kill shift he took early in the second period that knocked him out of the eventual 5-1 victory, Trouba confirmed he left the game after making contact with Wilson, but said he knew it wasn’t serious.

Trouba called it a “hockey play” that sometimes happens.

“For me, if I don’t feel like I can go play — if I’m worried about getting hit or something — it’s not worth me going back out there to play,” Trouba said. “Make sure things are good and I feel good today and everything is back to normal.”

The 29-year-old blueliner hasn’t missed a game since the 2021-22 season, when he was sidelined for a single contest April 27.

Since the Rangers didn’t recall a defenseman ahead of their departure for Florida, it’s safe to say Trouba is expected to play. In 33 games this season, Trouba has two goals and 11 assists with 33 penalty minutes.

“That was good [to see],” head coach Peter Laviolette said of Trouba skating. “He feels good. Had a good practice. No restrictions for him. That’s a heavy piece of our lineup, a big piece of our lineup.”

The Rangers recalled forward Adam Edstrom from AHL Hartford in a precautionary move given the upcoming road trip.

Friday will mark the start of the Rangers’ sixth set of back-to-back contests. They have gone 3-2-0 in the first half, as well as 5-0-0 in the second. This is also the Rangers’ sixth straight week with back-to-back games on either Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

The Blueshirts’ 12-4-1 record for 25 points on the road ranks second in the NHL in wins, points, power-play percentage (30.2) and first in penalty-kill percentage (90.9).
