OKC’s Giddey won’t face charges over alleged relationship with minor
Josh Giddey won’t face any charges following a police investigation into allegations the Thunder guard was involved inappropriately with an underage girl.
Newport Beach, California police confirmed they have closed their investigation that had been opened in November after they found no corroborating evidence.
“After a thorough and exhaustive examination, we have completed our investigation into information that was circulating on social media involving Josh Giddey,” Newport Police said in a statement on Wednesday night. “Our detectives have reviewed all of the available information and were unable to corroborate any criminal activity related to Mr. Giddey.”
Allegations against Giddey, 21, first surfaced on social media in late November, when photos and videos surfaced that appeared to show the third-year pro with a minor believed to be a junior in high school.
The teen and her family would not cooperate with investigators, and famed attorney Gloria Allred was even hired by the minor to represent her.
“I understand the question obviously, but no further comment right now,” Giddey told reporters, who pressed him repeatedly after the news initially broke.
Giddey has remained active for Oklahoma City, but he has not been received well on the road. The Aussie was booed during the Thunder’s trip through Los Angeles when they faced the Lakers on Monday and the Clippers on Tuesday.
Photos and videos leaked online showed Giddey with the underage girl, which included a video in which he says to the camera, “We’re at the front of the club, me and my girl, about to head back to mine.”
Australian site Code Sports reported in early December that Giddey claimed he thought the girl was 19 when they met in 2021 at a nightclub. A source also told the outlet that Giddey broke things off with the girl the next day after he learned she was under the age of 18.
The Post was able to identify the Oklahoma City club in the video, and it does have a policy of letting in people over the age of 18.
An NBA investigation had been opened after the allegations first came to light, but the league stepped to the side in order for the authorities to launch their own.
