MARGOT SNUBBIE!
Pink slip as Oscar noms drop
And the snub goes to . . . The 2024 Oscar nominations were announced Tuesday, and the omissions are brutal, including Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio and more.
Many of the nominations were expected: “Oppenheimer” got a total of 13 nods, including Best Actor for Cillian Murphy (below), Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. Bradley Cooper was nominated for “Maestro,” as lead actor, but not director, Emma Stone scored a Best Actress nod for “Poor Things” and Lily Gladstone did as well for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” But the selections also had some head-scratching choices. Ryan Gosling nabbed a Best Supporting Actor nod for his goofy portrayal of Ken in “Barbie.” The Oscars historically skew against rewarding comedic performances, so that’s essentially a throwaway nomination to leave the Supporting Actor category a race against his other four competitors. The movie also got a Best Picture nod, but Robbie (left) and director Greta Gerwig were shut out.
Gosling stood up for his snubbed collaborators, saying: “There is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no ‘Barbie’ movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie, the two people most responsible for this history-making, globally celebrated film.”
Piers & Ken’s last laugh
Post columnist Piers Morgan reacted to the Robbie snub and Gosling nod on X as the nominees were revealed: “Greta & Margot snubbed.. Ryan nominated.. = The Patriarchy has the last laugh. #Oscars.”
Bizarrely, America Ferrera nabbed a nomination for “Barbie” as well (for Best Supporting Actress).
Even the Animated Feature category wasn’t free from snubs, as it omitted Disney’s “Wish,” starring Ariana DeBose and Chris Pine.
In addition to Gosling and Downey, the Best Supporting Actor category gave recognition to Sterling K. Brown (“American Fiction”), Robert De Niro (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and
Mark Ruffalo (“Poor Things”).
But there were two notable absences in that category: DiCaprio’s slimy portrayal of Ernest Burkhart in “Killers of the Flower Moon” and Charles Melton’s heartbreaking portrayal of grooming survivor Joe in “May December.” In fact, “May December” was nearly snubbed entirely, save for a Best Screenplay nod — including Julianne Moore, Natalie Portman and director Todd Haynes, despite the fact that Melton, Moore and Portman got Golden Globe nominations.
Emerald Fennell’s nasty, colorful “Saltburn,” starring Jacob Elordi, also was ignored. Maybe that bathtub scene or the nude dancing was too much for the Academy’s sensibilities.
The 2024 Oscars will be hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and air in a new earlier time slot (7 p.m.) March 10 on ABC.
