A KILLER CRUISE

Solving a mystery: it’s murder on the high seas in new Hulu dramedy ‘Death and Other Details’

Violett Beane, the star of Hulu’s “Death and Other Details,” said that her more seasoned co-star, Mandy Patinkin, took her under his wing.

“The guy is a legend, I’ve probably seen ‘The Princess Bride’ 17 times,” Beane, 27, told The Post.

“It was so interesting because so many times, it was like life imitating art. During the pilot, I was feeling overwhelmed … the weight of this show was on my back. I was like, ‘I need advice, how do you deal with all of this?’

“And he sat me down and gave me advice. It was sweet. It was like he’s mentoring me, similar to [our characters] Rufus and Imogene.”

Created by Mike Weiss (“The Mentalist”) and Heidi Cole McAdams (“Stumptown”), “Death and Other Details,” now streaming, is a murder mystery series following Imogene Scott (Beane), who first meets renowned detective Rufus Cotesworth (Patinkin, 71) as a child, when he’s investigating her mother’s death. Following that tragedy, she’s taken in by the wealthy Collier family.

In the present day, the Colliers (plus Imogene, now 28) are on an extravagant cruise with their extended family and friends, including Collier patriarch Lawrence (David Marshall Grant), his wife Katherine (Jayne Atkinson), their newly promoted daughter Anna (Lauren Patten), Anna’s wife, Lelia (Pardis Seremi) and Anna’s brother, Tripp (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

After there’s a murder on the ship, Imogene must team up with Cotesworth to solve the crime, which may tie into her mother’s death.

Beane (“The Flash” and “God Friended Me”) said the advice Patinkin gave her was, ‘At the end of the day, you look in the mirror and you look at yourself. So, you need to make sure that you’re proud of what you’re doing. And, that’s all that matters. Don’t listen to everything else – obviously you have to, sometimes, when producers give you notes. But at the end of the day, you need to feel good with what you’ve done.’”

“Death and Other Details” has been compared to “Knives Out,” “The White Lotus,” and “Only Murderers In the Building.”

“Those are all great,” said Beane. “I feel like we’re close enough to them to entertain the same audiences. But I also feel like there’s so many differences in our show. There’s so much heart, there’s a stylization that we have, and the way we blend comedy and mystery and the characters that come through – it’s really its own show.

“The twists and turns that happen are unexpected. I’m happy to be grouped in with them, but you’ll find your own little piece in the show.”v

Part of “Death and Other Details” was shot on The Queen Mary, a ship docked in LA, “which is notoriously haunted,” Beane said.

“A couple of us – some of the hair and makeup team – went on an expedition to see if we could find anything. At one point, our hair stylist, Anissa, said she swore she felt breath on her neck. I don’t know if I believe her, but that freaked me out.

“I was like, ‘Maybe we should stop the ghost tour!’”
