Oh, give us a brake, Lander

Pol racks up 9 school-zone speed tix

It’s ‘Do as I Say,’ not ‘Do as I Do.’ And he’s one of the top three elected citywide officials.

— State Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar on Brad Lander

City Comptroller Brad Lander coulda, woulda, shoulda slowed down behind the wheel, but he didn’t, and has been caught speeding in a school zone for the ninth time.

Lander, who championed a law to crack down on reckless driving and once admitted, “I should slow down,” was hit with a $50 summons from a speed camera on Shore Parkway last May after he promised to improve his dismal driving record, city records reviewed by The Post reveal.

During his campaign for the job in 2021, The Post revealed that Lander had been hit with eight school-zone speeding tickets since 2016, although he had publicly promoted speed cameras outside city schools and pushed legislation to crack down on unsafe driving.

Critics accused him of hypocrisy.

At least 10 mph too fast

Lander was caught again while driving his Toyota Prius on May 13. Although his exact speed wasn’t clear, the traffic camera only activates when drivers clock at least 10 mph over the speed limit.

He also has added to his collection four tickets for parking in “No Parking Zones” during street cleaning since taking office — along 13th Street in Park Slope near his home on Oct. 29 and 31, 2022, and July 17 and Oct. 2, 2023, records show.

The fine for the second parking violation in 2022 was for $75 and the three others were $65. The comptroller also was socked with a $35 fine for failing to display a metered receipt while parking on Sept. 25, 2023, also on 13th Street.

Politicos who know the self-described progressive Lander said they weren’t surprised.

“It’s ‘Do as I Say,’ not ‘Do as I Do,’ ” said state Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar, who lives in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn. “And he’s one of the top three elected citywide officials.”

Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa mocked Lander.

“Lander is one of those anti-car people who thinks he rides a chariot,” said Sliwa, the 2021 Republican candidate for mayor.

Lander ’fessed up to the latest goof. “Brad . . . sincerely regrets the one speed camera violation he has received since becoming Comptroller,” said Chloe Chik, a Lander spokesperson.

In an audit he released last week on the speed camera program, Lander acknowledged his troubled driving history.

“This is an issue that I have fallen short on myself, so I know firsthand how important it is . . . for all of us to practice responsible driving,” he said.

A NYPD detail drives Lander when on duty as comptroller, but all of his tickets came when he was driving his own car on personal business.
