Dream couple comes up Short

-

MARTIN Short has dashed our hopes for Hollywood’s greatest undercover couple since Hepburn and Tracy by denying that he and Meryl Streep are dating.

“We’re not a couple. We are just very close friends,” Short said on Bill Maher’s “Club Random” podcast.

Short’s denial came after Maher referred to the septuagenarian “Only Murders in the Building” co-stars as a “power couple.”

Maher joked that he should consider dating Streep anyway. (We agree.) “There’s nothing more powerful in Hollywood than a power couple,” he quipped. “It worked for Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. It worked for

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.”

Short, 73, and Streep, 74, sparked romance rumors earlier this month when they were spotted looking friendly while seated together at the Golden Globe Awards.

But Page Six had been hearing industry chatter since mid-December about the pair possibly dating. When we nosed around at the time, sources close to Streep shot down the alleged romance.

A rep for Short said after the Golden Globes: “They are just very good friends, nothing more.”

“It’s pretty unexpected to imagine a pairing of Meryl Streep with Martin Short and watch them find this incredible connection together,” showrunner John Hoffman told the Wrap in August. Alas, he was speaking only of their on-screen chemistry.

We exclusively reported in October that the “Devil Wears Prada” star and her husband, Don Gummer, had secretly separated six years ago after four decades of marriage.

While the former couple had not been seen together since 2018, Streep had continued to wear her wedding ring until the news of their split made headlines.

Short was married to Nancy Dolman from 1980 until she died in 2010 at the age of 58 after battling ovarian cancer.
