Three’s company
Steve Spagnuolo won his first Super Bowl ring as defensive coordinator with the Giants on Feb. 3, 2008. If he gets his third with the Chiefs on Feb. 11, he will become the first NFL coach with four in the role of offensive or defensive coordinator. Here is a look at the five with three apiece:
RICHIE PETITBON Washington defensive coordinator Super Bowls XVII, XXII, XXVI
Known for his mix-andmatch game plans and halftime adjustments, Petitbon was Joe Gibbs’ right-hand man for his entire first tenure as head coach (1981-92) but lasted only one season succeeding Gibbs as head coach.
CHARLIE WEIS (left) Patriots offensive coordinator Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX
The former Giants and Jets assistant introduced the Erhardt-Perkins offensive system known for its multiple formations and personnel groupings to young Tom Brady before becoming a college head coach.
ROMEO CRENNEL Patriots defensive coordinator Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX
Crennel was an assistant coach under either Bill Parcells or Bill Belichick for all but one season from 1981-2004, winning three rings in those last four years to go with one he had (Super Bowl XXV) as a special teams coordinator for the Giants before getting his shot to run two teams.
JOSH MCDANIELS Patriots offensive coordinator Super Bowls XLIX, LI, LIII
The twice-failed head coach was on board for all six of the Patriots’ championships, including three as a coordinator during a seven-year span (2012-18) when the Patriots led the NFL in scoring and committed the fewest turnovers.
STEVE SPAGNUOLO Giants, Chiefs defensive coordinator Super Bowls XLII, LIV, LVII
The only offensive or defensive coordinator in NFL history to win in that role for two different franchises — sandwiched around three losing seasons as a head coach — runs a complex, aggressive system that is known for putting an onus on defensive backs and hitting its stride late in seasons.
