NHL: Devils dump Sharks

Nico Hischier scored a goal and added three assists and the Devils exploded for three goals in the second period to earn a 7-2 victory over the Sharks in San Jose. Jack Hughes added a goal and two assists and Nico Daws made 29 saves for the Devils.

In Toronto, Jonathan Marchessau­lt had two goals and an assist, and the Golden Knights beat the Maple Leafs 6-2 to snap Toronto’s seven-game winning streak.

In Detroit, Shayne Gostisbehe­re scored in each of the first two periods and the Red Wings beat the Capitals 8-3, for their first six-game winning streak in nearly five years.

In St. Paul, Minn., Stefan Noesen scored a goal with his face midway through the third period and the Hurricanes rallied to beat the Wild 3-2.

HOOPS: Cavs win on buzzer-beater

Max Strus drilled a 59-footer as time expired, his fifth made 3-pointer in the final four minutes, to give the Cavaliers a wild 121-119 win over the Mavericks in Cleveland.

P.J. Washington’s dunk had given the Mavericks the lead with 2.9 seconds left before Strus, who scored 21 points, hit the gamewinnin­g basket with no time remaining.

In Boston, Jaylen Brown scored 30 points, Jayson Tatum added 28 and the Celtics earned their ninth straight win, powering past the 76ers 117-99.

In Bloomingto­n, Ind., Indiana defeated Wisconsin 74-70 in a Big Ten game that was delayed midway through the second half after a fire alarm went off in Assembly Hall, prompting the arena to be evacuated. Fans began filing back into Assembly Hall after about 20 minutes, and play resumed after a five-minute warm-up.

In Lawrence, Kan., Dallin Hall and Jaxson Robinson scored 18 points apiece as BYU rallied from a 12-point deficit to beat seventh-ranked Kansas 76-68, ending the Jayhawks’ 19-game home winning streak.

In Starkville, Mass., Reed Sheppard scored on a driving layup with two-tenths of a second remaining and finished with a career-high 32 points, giving No. 16 Kentucky a 91-89 victory over Mississipp­i State.

In The Bronx, Kyle Rose had 16 points and hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 3.9 seconds remaining to give Fordham a 61-60 victory over George Mason.

NFL: Watson to resume throwing

Browns quarterbac­k Deshaun Watson will resume throwing next month following right shoulder surgery that cut short his second season with Cleveland after just six starts. Watson fractured a bone in his throwing shoulder in a win over Baltimore on Nov. 12.

Cherry Starr, the philanthro­pist wife of former Packers quarterbac­k and coach Bart Starr, has died at her home in Birmingham, Alabama. She was 89. Cherry and Bart were high school sweetheart­s and were married for more than 60 years before Bart died in 2019.

The Vikings hired Josh McCown ,an 18-year NFL veteran who played for 12 teams, as their quarterbac­ks coach.

MLB: Bellinger finalizes return

The Cubs finalized Cody Bellinger’s $80 million, three-year contract after they traded left-hander Bailey Horn to the White Sox, clearing a spot on their 40-man roster. The Cubs sent Horn to the White Sox for minor league right-hander Matt Thompson.
