Knicks, Cavs will drive in slow lane
The Knicks are hitting the road Sunday evening, and it’s probably not the worst thing in the world after suffering through a 1-3 homestand.
They travel to northern Ohio for a quick stop against the Cavaliers before returning home for four consecutive games.
It’s a playoff rematch as the Knicks eliminated the Cavaliers in the first round last season in five games. However, Cleveland has taken a huge step by moving into first place in the Central Division, while the Knicks are trying to fight off Philadelphia for second place in the Atlantic.
The Knicks stumbled through February by losing eight of their past 11 games, capped off by double-digit setbacks to the Pelicans and Warriors.
To make matters worse, New York has not done well against the point spread in this span. The Knicks have covered one time in 11 tries, which came in the blowout win at Philadelphia right after the All-Star break.
Cleveland snapped a seven-game streak in which it failed to cover the spread by topping the Pistons, 110-100, on Friday as seven-point favorites.
Though the Cavs haven’t been great in that department lately, they continue to win games, going 21-6 since the start of January to pull atop the Central alongside Milwaukee. Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell sat out the win at Detroit, but Darius Garland led the way with 29 points.
The teams have split a pair of matchups this season. The Knicks won in Cleveland on Halloween night, 109-91, as Jalen Brunson led the way with 19 points. The next night at Madison Square Garden, the Cavs held on for a 95-89 victory behind 30 points from Mitchell.
The Knicks are on a 7-1 run to the Under, though New York and Cleveland combined have hit the Under in seven consecutive matchups.
It’s hard to ignore the low-scoring games these teams are accustomed to playing, and Sunday night should be no exception.
