Amazon faker burgles $35K
A phony Amazon worker has ripped off nearly $35,000 in jewelry and valuables — including cash stashed for a 12-year-old girl — during a months-long burglary spree, authorities said.
The prowler — seen in surveillance video wearing an Amazon delivery vest — is suspected in a string of nine cat burglaries and break-ins from January 2023 to March 5, targeting the Queens neighborhoods of Astoria, Sunnyside and Long Island City, police said.
In all nine cases he entered homes by climbing through windows, according to police then loaded up on valuables before fleeing the area on foot.
Took preteen’s cash
In a Feb. 28 heist — the one that netted him the most loot — the thief entered through the window of a home at 39th Place and 43rd Avenue in Sunnyside around 10:30 a.m. Feb. 28 and stole about $9,000 as well as $1,800 worth of unspecified property, cops said.
That victim, single mother Estrla Islas, told FOX 5 that the burglar made his way inside through a bathroom window, rummaged through her drawers and closets and stole the money she’d saved for her 12-year-old daughter.
“He took almost like $9,000,” Islas told the network, adding, “$9,000 in cash.”
In the March 5 case, the suspect crept in through the window of a home at 53rd Street and Skillman Avenue, also in Sunnyside, cops said.
He stole $6,500 worth of jewelry and other property, in addition to about $200 in cash, police said.
That case was one of at least five incidents in which the thief pocketed jewelry, according to authorities.
The first known case related to the thief was Jan. 26, 2023 when he climbed through a window at 37th Street and 28th Avenue and stole $4,400 worth of jewelry and other property, cops said.
The spree continued with at least two more robberies in February, according to police.
The burglar struck again in August and September and has struck at least four times since the new year, police said.
In total, he has made off with an estimated $34,705 in cash, jewelry and other items, according to cops.
The cat burglar was still on the loose as of Thursday.
