Rapper’s agency runs afoul of MLB
Rimas Sports, the agency led by musician Bad Bunny, is in hot water with the MLB Players Association.
Rimas, which has the Mets’ Francisco Alvarez and Ronny Mauricio on its client roster, saw main agent William Arroyo have his certification revoked after the MLBPA investigated following complaints about improper benefits provided to players, according to ESPN.
Other agents whose licenses are pending will not be approved, according to The Athletic.
Bad Bunny, whose real name is Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio, launched Rimas along with his manager, Noah Assad, in April 2023, and within a week the MLBPA received evidence the agency was offering cash, cars and gifts for players to change representation in direct violation of the union’s agent regulations, ESPN reported.
According to The Athletic, some complaints involved non-certified employees acting in an agent capacity.
It’s not known if Arroyo or Rimas will appeal the decertification.
“At Rimas Sports, we uphold the highest standards of professionalism and integrity of our industry,” the company said in a statement to ESPN. “Out of respect for an ongoing process within the context of the MLBPA Agent Regulations, we will refrain from making any comments at this time. We remain committed to continue serving our clients with excellence.”
Rimas’ client list focuses on Puerto Rican players and counts longtime MLB catcher Ivan Rodriguez as an ambassador.
In addition to Alvarez and Mauricio, the agency also represents the Giants’ Wilmer Flores, Rockies shortstop Ezequiel Tovar, the Reds’ Santiago Espinal, the Orioles’ Livan Soto and top Dodgers prospect Diego Cartaya, among others.
Alvarez had no comment.
