HULU’s period drama “We Were The Lucky Ones,” based on the novel by Georgia Hunter, follows the Kurc family through the hardships of World War II.

The family members are separated and reunited, and face unspeakable terrors in their quest for safety. Episode 5, titled “Ilha Das Flores,” sees the youngest Kurc sibling making a huge sacrifice to search for someone she loves.

Halina Kurc (Joey King) has a sweet relationship with her family’s tenant Adam Eichenwald (Sam Woolf ), but they put a halt on their budding romance as the war worsens and the Jewish family finds their livelihood at stake.

Early on, Adam is drafted into the Polish Army and the young lovers are separated when he’s relocated to Lvov with two of the Kurc brothers.

Halina and her brother’s girlfriend Bella (Eva Feiler) follow the men to Lvov where they face many challenges and eventually go into hiding.

In this week’s episode, Adam goes missing and Bella and her boyfriend decide to flee to safety. Halina chooses to stay back and search for Adam, despite being urged to leave. The young woman learns of a nearby labor camp where she suspects Adam is being held.

Halina goes undercover at the German camp as a nonJewish person. She approaches an officer and claims that her husband has been mistaken as a Jewish person and was wrongfully imprisoned. Halina shows the officer a photo of Adam and asks if he’s at the camp. The officer doesn’t cooperate at first, but Halina bribes him with silver and is told to return in the evening.

Halina has a tearful reunion with Adam and writes a letter home, telling her family of their safety. “To my dearest family,” she writes. “By some miracle, I was able to locate our dear Adam and secure his release. The horrors he endured at the hands of the Wehrmacht, it is unthinkable.” Halina continues to share that they fled to the countryside and “found respite with some true friends.”

After Adam’s recovery, the couple moved to Warsaw and made their relationship official with a ring. “I will never leave his side. He will never leave mine. We have much respect for our courageous friends in the woods, but we have a different path,” Halina writes to her family before encouraging them to find a way to join them.

Halina risked her life to follow her heart and it paid off. The young woman was reunited with her lover and found security in a new town. Episode 5 ends on an optimistic note, which was needed after the tragedy of the previous episode.
