Oil heir Ivy weeds out hubby
BILLIONAIRE heiress and fashion favorite Ivy Getty — the great-granddaughter of oil tycoon J. Paul Getty — has filed for divorce from her husband of three years, Tobias Engel, Page Six has learned.
The couple wed in a private ceremony in December 2020, we hear, before having an opulent storybook wedding the next year that was breathlessly covered by Vogue.
A source tells us that the couple has a prenup in place, protecting her famed family’s massive wealth. “Obviously, being a member of the Getty family, Ivy is careful about legal entanglements,” said a source.
Ivy, 29, and Engel, in his 30s, first met at Paris fashion week, and he proposed in Capri, Italy.
A court docket, seen by Page Six, shows Getty filed for divorce in January. It’s listed as “contested,” meaning the parties did not settle with a mediator before Getty filed.
In happier times, their luxe nups kicked off with a Mod, British Invasion-themed pre-wedding bash at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco with performances by Mark Ronson and Earth, Wind & Fire. They were wed at nearby City Hall by then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. Actress Anya Taylor-Joy was a bridesmaid.
Elite guests included Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco Mayor London Breed, Princess Olympia of Greece, designer Wes Gordon and Vogue’s Hamish Bowles. Getty wore a jawdropping mirrored John Galliano gown. Her veil was embroidered with walnuts in honor of her grandmother Ann, who raised Ivy in the Getty mansion and grew up on a walnut farm. Ivy’s father, John Gilbert Getty, and her grandmother both died in 2020. Her mother is jewelry designer Alyssa Boothby, and the two aren’t close, we were told.
Engel was born in Vienna to Austrian businessman Peter Engel and “Coronation Street” actress Cheryl Prime.
Reps for Getty didn’t get back to us, and we were unable to reach Engel.
