Hunter appeal ‘stunt’: feds

- Priscilla DeGregory

Federal prosecutors in First Son Hunter Biden’s California tax-fraud case have told a court his latest appeal is “a stunt to delay his trial.”

Biden, 54, is attempting to appeal his lost bid to toss the case accusing him of failing to pay at least $1.4 million in federal income taxes for 2016 through 2019.

Special counsel David Weiss’ office said in papers filed in Los Angeles federal court Tuesday that Biden improperly filed the notice of appeal as a “stunt” in order to push back his June 20 trial date. Biden has “decided, unilaterally, that he can ignore the schedule set by the court,” the feds charge.

Even if the appeals court quickly rejects the appeal, Biden “will likely claim he needs more time to prepare” and ask to postpone the trial further, prosecutors allege.

“The court should reject the Defendant’s attempt to put himself above the law and game the system,” prosecutors wrote in asking a judge to force Biden to honor all pretrial deadlines.

On April 1, Judge Mark Scarci shot down Biden’s argument that the charges against him should be dismissed because he is a victim of “selective and vindictive” prosecution.

At the time, Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, blasted the “abnormal way the special counsel handled this investigation.”

Biden is charged with six misdemeanor and three felony counts. Prosecutors claim he blew money on an “extravagant” lifestyle, including “drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, . . . in short, everything but his taxes.”

Weiss’ office charged Biden in California after a plea deal in a gun case against him in Delaware broke down last year. The trial in that case is set for June 3.

Biden’s lawyers didn’t return a request for comment.
