Bohm will go boom vs. Mets
Amongst the star-powered cast that has catapulted the Phillies atop the NL East, Alec Bohm is at the nucleus.
We may only be a month-and-a-half into the baseball season, but Bohm is manifesting a breakout campaign, hitting .343 entering play Sunday — tied for the fourthhighest average in baseball.
Bohm’s been posting eye-popping advanced hitting metrics. He holds a batting run value of positive-18 and a .303 xBA, ranking within the top 4 percent of all hitters.
Bohm leads the Phillies in on-base percentage ahead of their first meeting on Monday with the Mets, who begin the series with Sean Manaea on the mound.
Manaea is having a tough relationship with the strike zone as he’s not eliciting many chases or whiffs and walking at a 12.5 percent rate. He leans heavily on his sinker — a pitch Bohm has made excellent contact with.
But it’s not so much power hitting that is defining Bohm’s game right now; it’s the singles that he’s been racking up hand over fist. His exit velocity hasn’t improved versus any other season while he’s maintaining consistent quality of contact and threading gaps with stellar plate discipline.
Manaea’s inability to achieve outs on his own offers Bohm upside for some more of those knocks on Monday.
