Po­lice: Man charged with DUI af­ter hit­ting pedes­trian

A 23-year-old man from Bear was charged with im­paired driv­ing af­ter strik­ing and in­jur­ing a pedes­trian early Sun­day morn­ing, po­lice said.

John Stro­bel was driv­ing a 2003 Buick LeSabre north on North Col­lege Av­enue just af­ter 2 a.m., ac­cord­ing to Sgt. Ger­ald Bryda, a spokesman for the Ne­wark Po­lice De­part­ment.

As Stro­bel turned left onto Ray Street, he hit a 19-year-old woman who had just stepped into the cross­walk, Bryda said. The woman was rushed to Chris­tiana Hos­pi­tal to be treated for se­ri­ous in­juries to her head, spine and leg.

Stro­bel was charged with DUI, driv­ing with­out proof of in­surance, fail­ure to have reg­is­tra­tion in his pos­ses­sion and civil pos­ses­sion of mar­i­juana. He was re­leased pend­ing fu­ture court pro­ceed­ings.

Bryda said the crash in­ves­ti­ga­tion is con­tin­u­ing, and ad­di­tional charges may be filed.
