The Newark Community Band celebrated its 35th anniversary Sunday with a free concert at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark.

Under the direction of David Harris, the band performed classical, Latin, theater and folk pieces, lively marches and the popular Brubeck jazz number “Take Five.”

Founded in 1983, the band was created as a place for local musicians to continue pursuing their musical interests after they graduate from high school or college. It has dozens of performers of all ages, including two who have been with the band since its founding.

The band practices regularly at the Newark Municipal Building and holds several performances around the area each year.
