Newark traffic stop leads to gun, drug charges
Two New Castle men were arrested after they were found with a handgun and marijuana during a traffic stop in Newark, police reported.
An officer pulled over their car after seeing the driver run a red light at 9:17 p.m. March 16, according to Lt. Andrew Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
The officer smelled marijuana and then searched the vehicle, finding a loaded 9mm handgun, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and materials used to package drugs for sale, Rubin said.
Police arrested the driver, 21-year-old Malcom Cheeks, and the passenger, 22-year-old Isaiah Cheeks. Both were charged with carrying a concealed deadly weapon, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited, possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and related offenses.
The were both committed to the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in lieu of $21,500 secured bond.
