Ne­wark traf­fic stop leads to gun, drug charges

Two New Cas­tle men were ar­rested af­ter they were found with a hand­gun and mar­i­juana dur­ing a traf­fic stop in Ne­wark, po­lice re­ported.

An of­fi­cer pulled over their car af­ter see­ing the driver run a red light at 9:17 p.m. March 16, ac­cord­ing to Lt. An­drew Ru­bin, a spokesman for the Ne­wark Po­lice De­part­ment.

The of­fi­cer smelled mar­i­juana and then searched the ve­hi­cle, find­ing a loaded 9mm hand­gun, mar­i­juana, drug para­pher­na­lia and ma­te­ri­als used to pack­age drugs for sale, Ru­bin said.

Po­lice ar­rested the driver, 21-year-old Mal­com Cheeks, and the pas­sen­ger, 22-year-old Isa­iah Cheeks. Both were charged with car­ry­ing a con­cealed deadly weapon, pos­ses­sion of a firearm by a per­son pro­hib­ited, pos­ses­sion of mar­i­juana with in­tent to de­liver and re­lated of­fenses.

The were both com­mit­ted to the Howard R. Young Cor­rec­tional In­sti­tu­tion in lieu of $21,500 se­cured bond.
