Man injured by falling ice during Newark’s Wine and Dine festival
A 48-year-old man attending Newark’s Wine and Dine festival was injured when snow and ice fell from the Washington House and struck him Saturday afternoon, a witness said.
The man was standing on the sidewalk just outside the Stone Balloon Ale House when he was struck, his brother, Brett Orth, said.
“A large block of snow and ice fell off the top deck and hit him right in the back,” Orth said.
He added that the impact knocked his brother to his knees, though he was able to stand up after an ambulance arrived.
Orth said he, his brother and other friends regularly attend the Wine and Dine festival, in which attendees stroll between 14 downtown restaurants offering special food and wine pairings.
“This is our 10th year,” he said.
Police and firefighters responded to the scene but did not cordon off the area, and the event continued.
The Washington House contains luxury condominiums as well as commercial space, including the Stone Balloon Ale House. It underwent extensive exterior renovations in 2014 when the brick façade began falling off, though there were no reports of injuries then.
