1 ar­rested, 1 sought in Barks­dale Road pack­age thefts

An alert city worker helped catch the cul­prit in a se­ries of pack­age thefts in Ne­wark, po­lice re­ported.

A woman got out of the car and stole a pack­age from the front steps of the home, the worker and a neigh­bor told po­lice.

The city worker fol­lowed the Lexus while di­al­ing po­lice and saw the car stop in front of a home in the 1200 block of Barks­dale Road, where the woman stole an­other pack­age.

The worker pro­vided the car’s li­cense plate num­ber to po­lice, who tracked the driver to his home in the 1600 block of Otts Chapel Road. There, po­lice stopped the ve­hi­cle as it was pulling out of the drive­way.

A search of the car and house turned up the stolen pack­ages, as well as oth­ers taken from the unit block of Julie Lane in Barks­dale Es­tates and the 900 block of Pick­ett Lane, lo­cated across the street in Cherry Hill, Rubin said.

Of­fi­cers ar­rested the driver, Ed­ward Ad­kins, 26, and charged him with third-de­gree con­spir­acy and four counts of theft. He was re­leased on $5,000 un­se­cured bond.

Po­lice also ob­tained an ar­rest war­rant for Ad­kins’ al­leged co-con­spir­a­tor, 25-year-old Adrian L. Jef­fer­son. She will face iden­ti­cal charges once ar­rested.
