1 arrested, 1 sought in Barksdale Road package thefts
An alert city worker helped catch the culprit in a series of package thefts in Newark, police reported.
The public works employee was in Barksdale Estates when he saw a green Lexus pull up to a home in the unit block of Sue Lane just before 2 p.m. Tuesday, according to
Rubin, a spokesman for the Newark
A woman got out of the car and stole a package from the front steps of the home, the worker and a neighbor told police.
The city worker followed the Lexus while dialing police and saw the car stop in front of a home in the 1200 block of Barksdale Road, where the woman stole another package.
The worker provided the car’s license plate number to police, who tracked the driver to his home in the 1600 block of Otts Chapel Road. There, police stopped the vehicle as it was pulling out of the driveway.
A search of the car and house turned up the stolen packages, as well as others taken from the unit block of Julie Lane in Barksdale Estates and the 900 block of Pickett Lane, located across the street in Cherry Hill, Rubin said.
Officers arrested the driver, Edward Adkins, 26, and charged him with third-degree conspiracy and four counts of theft. He was released on $5,000 unsecured bond.
Police also obtained an arrest warrant for Adkins’ alleged co-conspirator, 25-year-old Adrian L. Jefferson. She will face identical charges once arrested.
