Man charged with stealing patio furniture from Newark market
A Philadelphia man was cited for allegedly stealing patio furniture from the Acme in Suburban Plaza.
Thomas J. Hicks, 34, arrived at the store at 7 a.m. Sunday and loaded a furniture set worth $582 into his pickup truck, according to Sgt. Gerald Bryda, a spokesman for the Newark Police Department.
Hicks then went into the store and filled a cart with items, but he abandoned the cart as Acme employees “actively watched” him, Bryda said.
The employees confronted Hicks, who unloaded most of the furniture and drove away with two chair cushions still in his truck, Bryda said.
Arriving officers pulled over the truck and cited Hicks for shoplifting.
He was released at the scene pending an appearance in Newark Alderman’s Court.
