Churches hold special services
The following Sunday, churches in Newark held special services to commemorate the armistice.
The Episcopal Church sung the new patriotic hymn “Unfurling the Flag,” while Royal Sanborn held a flag aloft, the Newark Post reported at the time.
The Catholic Church hosted an evening peace sermon by the Rev. John N. Dougherty. Meanwhile, at the Methodist Church, the Rev. Frank P. Herson gave what the Post described as “a powerful sermon [that] showed this was a war for righteousness waged to bring nearer the kingdom of Christ.”
