Iron Mike wins Dis­tin­guished Ser­vice Cross

As Ne­wark­ers fêted the end of the war, word ar­rived of an­other rea­son for cel­e­bra­tion – one of the town’s na­tive sons had been awarded the Dis­tin­guished Ser­vice Cross for “ex­tra­or­di­nary hero­ism” in com­bat.

Sec­ond Lt. John Wil­son O’Daniel, of the 11th In­fantry, was hon­ored for his ac­tions dur­ing the Bat­tle of Saint-Mi­hiel in France.

“After be­ing se­verely wounded in the head early in the ac­tion, Lieu­tenant O’Daniel con­tin­ued in com­mand of his pla­toon, lead­ing his men for sev­eral hours un­til forced to give in to com­plete phys­i­cal ex­haus­tion, thus dis­play­ing the most ex­cep­tional courage, de­ter­mi­na­tion and de­vo­tion to duty,” the ci­ta­tion read.
