Souderton rolls past Methacton

- By Mike Cabrey

hyle Wenger had almost the entire football field to traverse, but the Souderton senior was still set on turning his interception into six points.

“I looked to the side once or twice, there was a couple big guys running after me,” he said. “My only thought was get in the end zone, outrun those guys.”

Wenger did just that, taking his second pick of Methacton quarterback Brandon Bossard back 95 yards to cap off a 21-point second quarter for the host Indians, who cruised past the Warriors 35-0 in Friday night’s Week 1 non-league matchup.

“I think we played a great game from the start,” Wenger said. “Coaches, they told us just go out here and have fun. Stay loose, don’t think too much. And I think we did a great job.”

Anthony Williams rushed for 101 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries, while Jarrett Reinhold and Jon Horton also ran for scores as Souderton (1-0) won its season opener for the first time since 2008.

“The kids really came out and they had a good mindset from the start,” Indians coach Ed Gallagher said. “They were focused and they took care of business.”

Methacton (0-1) could never get things going on offense, starting the game with a pair of three-and-outs and a turnover as the Big Red built a 21-0 advantage.

The Warriors seemed to find some rhythm on one secondquarter drive — moving 50 yards down to the Souderton 15 — but that ended with Wenger’s pick six.

“I mean 21-0 is still manageable, somewhat. We’re driving down the field and then we get into that situation,” Methacton coach Paul Lepre said. “And that’s tough to rebound from.”

The Indians allowed the Warriors just 72 yards of total offense, holding Bossard — who has verbally committed to Eastern Michigan — to 38 yards on 7-of-24 passing.

“They were gashing us pretty good on the defensive side and hurting us on the offensive side, but I know my guys are never going to quit or give up,” Lepre said. “So, I hope they understand what kind of test we had tonight.”

Dan Knight had 86 yards on 10 carries, while Reinhard collected 72 yards on 13 carries as Souderton finished with 323 yards on the ground.

“We run the ball pretty well because we have a great offensive line,” Gallagher said. “Those kids really work hard in the weight room. They’re big, strong kids and they’re experienced. We got a really good start those first couple of drives just getting it down there.

“I would like to see us throw the ball a little bit better, but that’s going to come with time.”

For Souderton, the victory was the first in Week 1 since topping Neshaminy 14-13 four seasons ago. Methacton, meanwhile, has not won its opening contest of the year since beating St. Pius X 32-6 in 2007.

Both teams are home next week. Souderton faces Unionville Friday, while Methacton begins PAC-10 play against Perkiomen Valley Saturday.

Prior to the game, there was a moment of silence for former Indian Derek Brown, a 2010 Souderton graduate who died July 5 from injuries sustained in a car crash June 30.

Methacton’s Cooper Given was taken off the field in the ambulance after being injured on a five-yard catch in the second quarter. Lepre said he was notified that Given suffered a concussion.
