Pioneers cruise past Delco

- By Kev Hunter

Three different players scored goals for Christopher Dock in a dominant first half and the Pioneers went on to earn a 4-0 victory over visiting Delaware County Christian Wednesday night in a District One Class A nuarterfinal Game.

The win advances Dock to a semifinal matchup with either No. 3 New Hope Solebury or No. 6 Calvary Baptist, and that contest will be played at a neutral site on Tuesday evening.

“We started out a little slow but then we started picking it up,” said the Pioneers’ Logan Hunsberger, who scored twice for Dock. “We had our moments. Once we started doing one-two touches, then it started getting better.”

John Bishop broke the scoreless tie midway through the first half on this breezy night on the turf at Dock, and then just a minute later, Robbie Johnson doubled the lead to 2-0 by scoring unassisted.

Johnson set up Hunsberger for a score just before halftime, and Dock went into the break comfortably ahead, 3-0.

The second-seeded Pioneers overwhelmed No. 7 Delco with constant offensive pressure Wednesday, and Hunsberger’s second goal of the night pretty much sealed it early in the second half.

“EMy first goalF was just

following the ball and crashing on the net,” Hunsberger said. “The second one was just placing the ball where I wanted it. It wasn’t a great shot, but there was a lot that happened before it just to get (the ball) to me.”

The Pioneers found their way late in the first half.

“I think (in the early going), I thought we were sloppy and we didn’t play as well as we should have,” Dock coach Matt Moyer said. “We turned it around, and that’s the important part. Actually, I thought we played better soccer in the second half - only produced one goal, but I thought we were a lot better overall. A lot of times, I thought we had a good flow to the game, and objectively, we did pretty well overall. We have plenty of things to work on and we will.”

Young Delco finished its season 3-14.

“Christopher Dock is a good team and we’re very young,” Delco coach Rob Atkins said. “Last time we were here, we lost 8-0, so tonight we had a great 30-minute start. I think we had Dock on their heels and we were playing well. Dock’s a very good team and they play well together, and their goals often come in groups. They did that tonight. We only lose three seniors and we had six freshmen, all of whom had a lot of playing time throughout the season. So that’s rare to have that on a varsity team, and it’s exciting.”

Dock now looks to push further into districts.

“I think we have great potential if we play up to our level,” Hunsberger said. “We have a lot of potential. It’s just if we find it. It’s how we start - a lot of times that decides what happens.”
