Headlines tell the stories of 2012

The world didn’t come to an end in 2012, and, despite the fears, there likely will continue to be Twinkies.

But for the second year in a row, there was wild weather that caused lengthy power outages the end of October. This time, it was from Sandy, which went beyond a mere hurricane and was labeled a “superstorm.” In Colorado and Connecticu­t, massaFUHV VHnW WKH FRunWUy UHHOLnJ. $ “fiVFDO cliff” loomed in the new year.

In June, 26-year-old Michael Ma- rino Jr. was shot to death in Sellersvil­le by a Perkasie Borough Police DHSDUWPHnW RIfiFHU. BuFNV CRunWy District Attorney David Heckler ruled the shooting of the unarmed PDn wDV MuVWLfiHG Ey Dn DWWDFN Rn WKH RIfiFHUV, EuW UDLVHG TuHVWLRnV DERuW the way the situation was handled. A review by Perkasie Borough police Chief Joseph Gura concluded the WKUHH RIfiFHUV LnYROYHG KDG IROORwHG department policies, but that more WUDLnLnJ LV nHHGHG IRU RIfiFHUV GHDOing with people with mental health and substance abuse issues. A review by William Kelly, Abington’s police chief, also recommende­d the RIfiFHUV UHFHLYH DGGLWLRnDO WUDLnLnJ. Within the community, opinions were mixed. A lawsuit is expected to EH fiOHG Ey 0DULnR’V IDPLOy.

In May, a bus carrying Pennridge High School students home from a Dorney Park outing was involved in an accident that sent some of the students to hospitals. There were no serious injuries.

Another accident, this one in April on the Pennsylvan­ia Turnpike, killed News-Herald Managing Editor Emily Morris.

This was the year Sellersvil­le Theater celebrated its 10th year and Pennridge Community Day turned 40, while Dublin Borough and Grand View Hospital were at the century mark. It was also the year Pennridge Community Senior Center dropped the “senior” from its name.

At one April meeting, the Pennridge School Board approved redistrict­ing plans that will transfer some Deibler Elementary students to Guth Elementary and some Pennridge North Middle students to Penn South; decided there would not be a tax increase for the 201213 school year; approved a contract for work on Poppy Yoder Field; and approved having air conditioni­ng installed in 2013 in Pennridge Central Middle School.
