NCWV Media buys Maryland paper
West Virginia-based NCWV Media has bought e Republican, a weekly newspaper in Oakland, Maryland.
e newspaper was founded in 1877 by James Hayden and has been owned and operated by ve generations of the Sincell family, according to e Exponent Telegram.
“ is has been a di cult decision for our family,” said Donald Sincell, who has been the paper’s editor for almost 40 years. “ ere is no one in the next generation of our family who is interested in taking over management of the business for the future, so the timing for such a decision seemed right.”
Sincell’s younger sister Mary will be the new editor and his daughter Rachel will continue to be part of the news sta .
“Brian Jarvis, president of NCWV Media, also comes from a multigeneration family involved in newspaper publishing and clearly understands all of the aspects of ‘rural living,’ which was another important factor in our decision-making process,” Sincell said.
NCWV Media also publishes e Preston News & Journal, e Exponent Telegram daily, as well as e State Journal, e Bridgeport News, e Fairmont News, e Weston News, e Blue & Gold News, NCWV Life Magazine and other publications.
Kentucky Papers Sold
Appalachian Newspapers has purchased a group of newspapers in eastern Kentucky from Civitas Media. Appalachian’s parent company is Alabama-based Lancaster Management.
e publications include the Prestonsburg (Kentucky) Floyd County Times, East Kentucky Shopper, Hazard (Kentucky) Herald, Shopper Stopper and their digital platforms. Appalachian Newspapers publishes the Appalachian News-Express, Floyd County Chronicle, Mingo Messenger and Mountain Bargain Hunter in the area.
Sun Media group sold
Family-owned Sun Media Group is being sold to SJ Acquisition, a company controlled by RFB Holdings, which also owns MaineToday Media, Alliance Press in Brunswick and Courier Publications, based in Rockland, Maine, according to a news release.
“After four generations of family ownership, selling Sun Media Group was a di cult decision for the Costello family,” said Steve Costello, vice president of advertising and marketing.
“Reade Brower, owner of RFB Holdings, shares our belief in a bright future for the community newspaper business, one that includes printed products as well as exciting new products and services made possible in our continually evolving digital world,” Costello said.
Sun Media Group owns and operates 17 publications.
