The October 1993 Battle of Mogadishu—portrayed in the 1999 book Black Hawk Down: A Story of Modern War and the subsequent film—was partially prompted by a deadly, accidental U.S. attack on civilians months earlier. It ended with nearly 20 U.S. troops dead, as insurgents repelled a raid on a local militia leader. That effectively ended the U.S. intervention in Somalia’s ongoing civil war, but soldiers were deployed again in 2013 to assist local forces in battling the Al-qaeda-allied Al-shabab. President Donald Trump doubled the number of troops last year, to 500, and airstrikes continue to target Al-shabab and ISIS positions.
