“The Spirit of Camp David did wonders for the fortunes of Jimmy Carter last week,” gushed Newsweek about the President’s “rising polls and refurbishe­d image” in the wake of the peace accords signed between Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. The deal “brought a kind of good cheer that hasn’t been quite so palpable around the White House since Carter’s inaugural-day stroll down Pennsylvan­ia Avenue.” Last December, President Donald Trump helped broker diplomatic relations between Israel and four Arab League countries including the UAE and Bahrain.

1990

“For years families have assumed that a house would be not just a home but a perpetuall­y lucrative—and thoroughly safe—investment,” Newsweek said. “They were wrong.” Thirty years later, during COVID-19, U.S. home-price growth hit a record high this June, up 18.6 percent from the same period last year.

Macho “should be broadened to include both Mr. T and Mr. Mom,” Newsweek argued. It is time “for a reimaginin­g of what men should be expected to do in the two realms, home and work.” The pandemic rolled back some of those gains; in 2020, women with children under 13 spent almost three hours more each day on child care than men.
