Winners were determined by the responses of more than 11,000 real category shoppers. Market research professionals at Brandspark International managed the study.

Products were eligible for participation in the 2022 Brandspark New Product Awards (BNPA) if they were launched after July 1, 2021 and represented meaningful product innovation. Both national brands and private-label brands were eligible. Product nominations came from:

An online call for consumers to nominate their favorite new products.

A call for marketers to nominate their new products.

BNPA program managers and researchers' review of store shelves and advertising, and industry publications.

BNPAS are based on polling of category shoppers and feedback from users on all products in a category.

The polling of category shoppers was conducted via online survey. All voters were screened for participation in household shopping and must be purchasers of the specific category in order to vote on products within it. Respondents were recruited from multiple sources to ensure a broad sample representing a cross section of American shoppers. The final sample was weighted to a standard national profile of shoppers.

Randomly selected category shoppers were shown an image of the new product’s packaging and a short factual concept description. They were then asked to rate the product’s appeal and their intent to purchase and product superiority. Final determination of the category winners was based on a set formula for the “Best New Product Award Score.” The highest BNPA Score determined the category winner.
