THE IMAGES AND REPORTS OF THE plight of millions of Ukrainians under attack from Russia at home or trying to escape to safety in neighboring countries are heart wrenching. Maybe you want to help but aren’t sure which of the dozens of charities providing aid focus on the aspects of the crisis that you want to help most or will make the best use of your donation dollars.

The following list of nonprofits is a solid starting point. Partly sourced from watchdog Charity Navigator’s recommendations of financially responsible and transparent charities engaged in relief efforts in Ukraine, each of these 12 groups is registered with the Internal Revenue Service and maintains a strong digital presence that allows you to easily evaluate their services. That way you can have full confidence in your donation and potentially claim a tax deduction for your generosity, too.

assistance to ukrainian refugees

► UNHCR or the UN Refugee Agency is working with local governments and nonprofits in Poland, Hungary, Moldova, Romania and Slovakia to facilitate the arrival and care of Ukrainian refugees. The nonprofit is providing supplies as well as information on asylum procedures, legal advice and psychological support. A donation of $200 could help eight people with legal counseling, the agency says. ► Globalgiving’s Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund is also helping to provide shelter, food and clean water for refugees as well as health and psychosocial support and economic assistance. ► World Central Kitchen aims to fill the hungry stomachs of Ukrainian refugees. The nonprofit is cooking up hot meals at multiple locations along the Ukraine-poland border and is also supporting local restaurants preparing meals in the Ukrainian cities of Odesa and Lviv. WCK plans to extend services to Moldova, Slovakia and Hungary as well. ► The International Rescue Committee has been helping people impacted by humanitarian crises since 1933. The nonprofit’s leaders have been working with government and local nonprofits in Poland to prepare for the influx of Ukrainian refugees and provide additional support and supplies. The organization says that a $107 donation provides a refugee survival kit for a family that includes shelter materials and emergency cookstoves.

► Global Empowerment Mission is running a welcome center for Ukrainian refugees on the Poland-ukraine border. It is using donations to provide necessities like water and food to refugees while also paying for flights and train tickets to relocate those with family or friends in other countries.

aid to children impacted by the war

► UNICEF is helping to care for children in the country by providing safe water, health care, education and protection. That’s in addition to supporting 10 mobile teams that are providing psychosocial care to children suffering from abuse, separation from family and gender-based violence.

► Save the Children’s Ukraine Crisis

Relief Fund is giving children and families food, water, hygiene kits, cash assistance and psychosocial support. The international nonprofit says that 85 percent of each dollar donated goes directly to helping children in need.
