“In 2013, Jersey quietly rose to the top spot of the global rankings of offshore tax shelters,” wrote Newsweek as it covered class divisions and systemic child abuse on the Channel Island “known for warehousin­g nearly $2 trillion of the world’s wealth.” The magazine added, “while Jersey’s riches pile up, there is a growing perception among the island’s working class that there’s one set of rules for the haves and another for the have-nots.” Last year, to ease its housing crisis, the island’s parliament voted to exempt islanders from tax on rental income under £10,000 ($12,000) per year.

“The growing presence of women at work is forcing men to revise their sexual stereotype­s,” Newsweek said. “They are reassessin­g their priorities, their ideas about success, their notions of themselves as omnipotent husbands and lovers.” Two million men are stay-at-home dads in the u.s. in 2021, nearly double from 1989.

“Every generation thinks the weather isn’t what it used to be,” said Newsweek of the year’s extreme weather, “a result of global warming, itself a consequenc­e of air pollution.” Global average temperatur­e in 2022 was 1.87° F above preindustr­ial times, likely the fifth or sixth warmest year on record.
