“Fewer than 14 percent of AIDS victims have survived more than three years after being diagnosed, and no victim has recovered fully,” Newsweek reported during the epidemic. AIDS, caused by severe HIV, has no official cure. However, today’s treatment options significan­tly slow the HIV virus’ effects within six months, substantia­lly reducing both infection and fatality rates. According to the CDC, nearly 1.2 million Americans were living with HIV in 2021, with more than 36,000 people diagnosed that year. Annually, the U.S. government spends $20 billion for HIV prevention and care.

“Major (energy) savings can also be achieved by changing the nation’s driving habits—another prime target of the Carter package,” Newsweek wrote. Electric vehicle registrati­ons have surged, with more than 2.44 million registered in the U.S. in 2022. California leads with nearly 1 million EVS, largely due to incentives.
