May 20-21 Kempton Civil War Days: Special event is a living history of the Civil War era, featuring many Civil War impressionists from the 16th President of the United States to the drummer boy, Johnny Clem. Those visiting the encampments and riding the train will have up close and personal experiences as they ride the rails of the Wanamaker, Kempton and Southern Railroad while experiencing the Civil War through the memories of the soldiers, spies and politicians who lived during the 1800s. Plan to ride the train with special guests from the Civil War. Saturday trains depart beginning at 11 a.m. with the noon “Presidential Special” hosting President Lincoln. Admission is free and open to the public. May 21 Melcher’s Grist Mill Open House: Join Berks County Heritage Center volunteers
from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday, May 21 to learn about the operation and unique story of this single family grist mill, built in 1888 by Nicklos Melcher. The mill represents an extremely rare and complete example of a water powered, multipurpose farm mill. Relocated here from Bally, this family-owned mill operated through the use of millstones for grinding cornmeal and grains into feed for animals. This program is presented by the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department. May 22 Suicide Prevention workshop: QPR — Question, Persuade, Refer, a method of suicide prevention for non-professionals was developed by Dr. Paul Quinnett to make suicide prevention as commonplace as CPR. Dr Quinnett’s method seeks to help everyday people find ways to reach out to those in despair, to help them decide to continue living. Pastor Jane Kropa, a certified QPR trainer, will present a workshop on QPR in the upstairs of the Rohrbach Chapel, across Conrad Road from Huff’s Union Church (540 Conrad Road, Alburtis) on Monday, May 22 at 7 p.m. The public is welcome to attend this free community program for teens and adults.
