Goldie Faye (Pearson) Mazaika, 82 of Hamburg

Goldie Faye (Pearson) Mazaika, 82 of Hamburg, passed away in her home on Saturday, May 20, 2017 after a long battle with Alzheimers disease. She was born February 12, 1935 in Reading. Goldie was the wife of Albert F. Mazaika who died September 17, 1992. She was the daughter of the late Robert D. and Elsie A. (Epting) Pearson. Elsie was a 1952 graduate of Hamburg High School. She was married at St. Mary’s RCC on October 4, 1952 be Rev. Thomas Clark.

Goldie was member of St. Mary Roman Catholic Church where she sang in the choir and was a Past President of the Ladies Altar Society. She ran St. Mary’s Parish Hall for many years catering weddings, banquets, reunions and other events. She worked in the restaurant business for over 50 years starting with her mother who ran Mrs. Pearson’s Restaurant in the Pennsylvan­ia Railroad Station at 2nd and State Streets in Hamburg. She also cooked at the Hamburg Diner, the Union House, Eddies and Kings IGA Restaurant.

She was active in the Hamburg-Windsor PTA, the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, the Hamburg Sports and Band Boosters, her class reunion committee and many other civic organizati­ons and events. Goldie was a member of the Union Fire Company # 1, Hamburg and its Relief Associatio­n. She was a block parent for her neighborho­od. She helped at the soup kitchen, food bank and organized crews from the parish to assist.

At a very young age, Goldie sang in Pennsylvan­ia Dutch at events such as Ferrsomeli­ng and Wunner Knoss plus church functions. She enjoyed yard sales and flea markets. She loved her family and worked hard all her life to help them advance in their careers and placed the need of others ahead of her own.

She is survived by sons Robert, Timothy, David, Hamburg, Michael husband of Cathy, Mount Airy, MD. and Daniel husband of Jennifer of Hamburg. Daughters; Kathryn companion of Mark Lagan, San Francisco, CA and Rosemary companion of Andreas Gute, Portland, OR. Additional survivors include her granddaugh­ters; Jessica Amin wife of Hossam and their children Youssef and Ahmed, Hamburg, Lyndsey Roesch wife of Devon and their children, Kindra, Ian, Ethan and Aspen, Shoemakers­ville, Alyx, Reading, Brandi, York, Christina, Hamburg and Joy companion of Matt Palmer, Durham, NC. Grandsons; Christophe­r husband of Jessica, their children Latham and Raeya of Pfafftown, NC, Zachary, Hamburg, Noah, Mount Airy, MD, Aaron husband of Laura and their children Mia and Julia Gold, Frederick, MD, Caleb husband of Maggie, Fayettevil­le, NC. Caleb is a member of the U.S. Army serving in Afghanista­n. She was predecease­d by a daughter Theresa Jo (Mazaika) Gelinas formerly of Leominster, MA who died December 5, 2009, a brother Arlan H. Heckman who died April 26, 1991 and his wife Edith who died November 12, 1994 both formerly of Hamburg.

A viewing was held on Friday evening at the Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc., 40 S. 4th Street, Hamburg, PA. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday at St. Mary Church, PO Box 189, and 94 Walnut Road, Hamburg PA with an additional viewing. Burial followed in St. John’s Cemetery, Hamburg.
