Mertztown Scout awarded Eagle Scout rank
Lucas Moyer installed bocce ball Ccourt at The Lutheran Home as community service project
Lucas C. Moyer, 18, of Boy Scout Troop 575 (Hawk Mountain Council) in Longswamp was honored at a special Eagle Scout ceremony on Sunday, July 30.
To earn scouting’s highest award, Lucas had to earn at least 21 merit badges, serve as a leader in his troop, and complete a major community service project.
Lucas’ service project took place at The Lutheran Home at Topton. Lucas designed and installed a Bocce Ball Court for the Luther Haven residents of The Lutheran Home. In order to raise funds needed for this project, Lucas first organized two fundraisers which were projects in themselves: Joe’s Pizza Coupon Sale and a Spaghetti Dinner. The entire project entailed more than 462 hours of combined labor from project participants, including fundraising, leveling the ground, laying and rolling a rock base, laying 6x6’s and turf, and coordination with the Topton Home and contributors to the project. Lucas wishes to extend his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped with and supported his Eagle Project.
Lucas has been involved in scouts since first grade when he started with Cub Scout Pack 575. He has been a member of Troop 575 for the past 7 years. He earned 28 merit badges, and has served in various leadership positions for the Troop including most notably Den Chief for 5 years leading and guiding a young Cub Scout Den from Tiger Cub to Boy Scout. He is an elected member of the Order of the Arrow. He also participated in the BSA National Jamboree in Summit Bechtel, West Virginia in 2013, and was on the staff of Hawk Mountain Council’s National Youth Leadership Training Camp in 2013 and 2014.
Lucas is the son of Louise and Brian Moyer, Mertztown.
Lucas, who is a member of the National Honor Society and participated in many school, sports, church, 4-H and community activities, just graduated from Brandywine Heights High School and will be attending Penn State University majoring in veterinary medicine with the goal of becoming a large animal veterinarian.
