Penn State’s Shigo second in throws at Spire Invite

MORGAN SHIGO (FLEETWOOD) » The Penn State junior finished second to teammate David Lucas in the weight throw at the Spire Invitation­al on Feb. 9 in Geneva, OH with a toss of 67 feet, 4 ¾ inches. He also finished fourth in the shot put with a heave of 56 feet, 7 ¼ inches. Shigo posted a personal best throw in the weight throw when he finished second to Lucas at the Sykes & Sabock Challenge Cup on Feb. 2-3 in University Park with a toss of 71 feet, 9 ½ inches which stands fourth on the Big Ten Conference performanc­e list.

G RYAN (KUTZTOWN) » The Michigan senior will be one of the key performers for the women’s swim team at the Big Ten Championsh­ips Feb. 14-17 in Columbus, OH. A distance freestyler, Ryan’s top events this season are the 1,650 freestyle (16:05.88), the 1,000 freestyle (9:45.16) and the 500 freestyle (4:39.72). She competed in the 200 freestyle (1:48.99) and the 200 butterfly (2:02.92) as well as the relays with the Wolverines this season. She won the 500 and 1,650 last year and is a four-time Big Ten champion.

KASSIDY LESHER (HAMBURG) » The 6-foot-1 senior forward was named Centennial Conference Player of the Week for the second time this season on Feb. 5 for her play with the Dickinson women’s basketball team. Lesher has 16 double-doubles in 22 games this season including 12 straight. She’s tied for eighth in NCAA Division III in that category. She had 12 points and 15 rebounds in a 58-48 loss to Ursinus on Feb.10 and is averaging 14.1 points and 12.1 rebounds for the Red Devils who are 8-15 overall and 8-10 in league play. NICHOLAS STURM (HAMBURG) » The Alvernia senior kicked off his season with the men’s indoor track team by finishing 33rd in the 3,000 meter run at the Coach I Open on Jan. 13 in Lancaster with a time of 10:01.64. He came back with an improved time of 9:38.06 to finish 15th in Susquehann­a’s S.U. Open on Feb. 3 in Selinsgrov­e. He also finished 25th in the 5,000 meter run at the S.U. Challenge in 17:03.31. On Feb. 9, he competed in the mile at the NYU Division III Invitation­al in New York City and finished 43rd with a time of 4:47.80. RYAN SANTOS (EXETER) » Ryan Santos is in his final season playing with the Charleston men’s volleyball team and he and the Golden Eagles are off to a fast start at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in Eastern Intercolle­giate Volleyball Associatio­n play after defeating Princeton of the Ivy League 3-2 and 3-0 to kick off the EIWA season Feb. 9 and Feb. 10 in Charleston, W Va.

The 6-foot-6 outside hitter from Reading (Exeter Township) is second on the team in kills with 55 and points scored with 72.0. He leads in service aces with 11 and has 33 digs and 12 total blocks. He had 17 kills, seven digs, six service aces and four total blocks in the sweep of the Tigers.

“What we love about Ryan is that he is a leader on and off the court,” coach Dr. Bren Stevens said. “Ryan brings an incredible work ethic and sense of maturity to every practice. He is one of the strongest athletes on our team and his ability to make tough shots during pressure moments has been most helpful as we continue to grow as a program.”

Santos is one of the players who helped start the program when he was a freshman and led them through the growing pains. BEN MAACK (GOVERNOR MIFFLIN) » The Ursinus freshman finished fourth at 184 pounds at the Centennial Conference Wrestling Championsh­ips on Feb. 10 in Lexington, Va. Maack made it to the semifinals before losing 2-0 on riding time. He won a consolatio­n match before losing the third-place bout 7-3. He’s 23-9 on the season with 10 pins, three major decisions and one technical fall. He has a team-high 89 points scored and prepped for the league meet by going 2-0 with a 7-0 decision and a pin in 42 seconds at the McDaniel Duals Feb. 3 in Westminste­r, Md. KENZIE MYER (DANIEL BOONE) » The freshman wrapped up her first regular season with the Arcadia women’s swim team in a 184-71 Middle Atlantic Conference dual meet victory over Stevenson on Jan. 27 in Glenside. Myer finished third in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.69 and swam legs on the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay C squads, both finishing fourth. The Knights finished 11-1 overall and 9-0 in MAC meets and will be tough to beat in the league championsh­ips Feb. 15-18 in York.

ADAM MYERS (DANIEL BOONE) » The Ursinus senior is ranked second in the shot put on the Centennial Conference performanc­e list with a toss of 49 feet, 3 inches. He reached that distance when he finished second in the seasonopen­ing Diplomat Open on Dec. 2 in Lancaster. Myers finished fifth with a toss of 46 feet, ¾ inches at the Frank Colden Invitation­al on Feb. 3 in Collegevil­le. The league championsh­ip is set for Feb. 24-25 in Collegevil­le. Myers finished second in the shot at last year’s indoor league meet with a personal best toss of 49 feet, 4 ½ inches.

LUKE MYERS (GOVERNOR MIFFLIN) » The 5-foot-9 sophomore middle distance runner had his best meet of the indoor track season with the Colgate men’s team at the college’s Class of ’32 Invitation­al on Feb. 10 in Hamilton, N.Y. Myers finished second in the 1,000 meter run with a personal best time of 2:34.00. He also ran the third leg on the Raiders’ 4x800 relay which finished first with a time of 8:11.06. The relay team’s adjusted time of 8:04.14 ranks fifth in the Patriot League. JORDAN WOOD (BOYERTOWN) » The redshirt freshman is 13-5 overall and 8-2 in dual matches competing at 285 pounds for the No. 9-ranked Lehigh wrestling team. He has a pin and two major decisions for the Mountain Hawks who are 9-3 overall and 7-1 in Eastern Intercolle­giate Wrestling Associatio­n matches. Wood posted a 4-0 victory in Lehigh’s 20-17 loss to No. 10 Virginia Tech on Jan. 26 in Blacksburg, Va. He posted an 11-2 major decision victory in a 30-6 EIWA victory over Army on Jan. 21 in West Point, N.Y.
