From Tree to Table: Maple Sugaring 101

- From Berks County Parks and Recreation Department

Join the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department in experiencing a long-standing American tradition: maple sugaring. This program will be offered from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 3, at the Gring’s Mill Recreation Area.

Take a short walk through our park to participate and learn about the maple sugaring process. Find out why the first tap of the season produces sap lighter in color and is referred to as “nectar of the Gods” and just how many gallons of sap is needed to make one gallon of syrup. Learn the historical roots of maple sugaring from Native American & colonial times through present day; along with some fun facts.

Experience the process first hand by seeing the Sugar Maple tree tapped, and taste the sap directly from the tree. Then watch the process of boiling down the sap to attain the right consistency for syrup. And of course taste the final product on some pancakes, comparing real maple syrup to the storebought variety.

Cost is $3 per person. Pre-registration is required as space is limited. Call 610-374-2944 ext. 2611 to register.
