Optimist Club hosts 2018 Fool’s Run March 24

Proceeds benefit scholarshi­ps for local high school seniors to attend Kutztown University

The Optimist Club of Kutztown has announced the 2018 Fool’s Run is set to take place on Saturday morning, March 24.

The Fool’s Run contains both the Sally Miksiewicz Memorial 5k and the Bob Focht 10 mile race for runners to challenge themselves on the roads surroundin­g Kutztown. In addition, the Optmist Club of Kutztown 2 mile walk will again be held this year.

Races start and end on College Blvd. in front of the Kutztown Fairground­s and Kutztown University Lot 1 parking area. The Bob Focht Memorial 10 mile race starts at 9 a.m. and the Sally Miksiewicz 5K begins at 9:10 a.m. The Optimist Club 2 mile walk starts at 9:15 a.m. Race day registrati­on is from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Beltzner Hall on the Kutztown Fairground­s.

The races are run rain or shine. The race director will have the right and responsibi­lity to cancel the day’s events due to extreme and dangerous weather. In such instances, informatio­n will be available by calling 610-698-3826. There are no refund.

Proceeds from the run benefit the Donald Peters Memorial scholarshi­p fund, which awards scholarshi­ps to graduating seniors of Kutztown, Brandywine, Hamburg and Fleetwood school districts that are planning on attending Kutztown University. The Optimist Club has been able to provide $1,000 scholarshi­ps to two seniors from each of the four school districts for a total of over $250,000 given since the inception of the Run. Also funded a $1,000 scholarshi­p to the Kutztown University Football team scholarshi­p fund for their continued support of volunteeri­ng on the running routes of the Fool’s Run.

The funding for the scholarshi­ps comes from many sources including business sponsors, race entry fees for runners, and donations from individual­s and organizati­ons.

The Optimist Club of Kutztown was establishe­d in 1981 with a mission to serve the youth of the Kutztown and surroundin­g communitie­s.
