Gov. Mifflin’s Garl wins Pa. girls’ title
Governor Mifflin junior Emily Garl won the girls’ singles championship last weekend at the Pa. High School Bowling Championships in Pittsburgh.
Garl defeated Cumberland Valley’s Chloe Skurzynski 215-197 in the finals on March 16 after finishing qualifying as the No. 2 seed behind Skurzyski, who bested Garl at the Eastern Regionals.
Garl, the BCIAA champion, defeated Muhlenberg’s Sydne Blankenbiller 244-168 in the semifinals of the stepladder-format championship rounds.
Garl also posted the high game of the tournament with a 288.
On the boys side, Fleetwood’s Riley Celmer was Berks’ highest finisher. He finished qualifying in seventh place with 1,247 pins, 13 pins shy of making the top 5 to advance to the championship round.
Cedar Crest’s Kolby Bennett won the boys title after qualifying 5th and knocking off the top 4 in succession, dropping Lewisburg’s Anthony Neuer in the final, 241-182.
In the team tournament held a day later, the Muhlenberg girls were the No. 2 seed after qualifying and fell to Shikellamy 2-0 in the finals. Muhlenberg top scorers were Madison Burkert (659), Mackenzie Schlegel (602) and Sydne Blankenbiller (591).
Gov. Mifflin qualified 5th to miss the top 4. Garl (640), Emily Breidegam (555) and Alyssa Breidegam (531) led the way.
For the boys, Daniel Boone and Wilson qualified fourth and first, respectively. The Blazers lost to Franklin Regional in the quarterfinals 2-1 while Wilson lost to Penn Manor 2-1 in the championship.
John Garner (630), Nick Biagianto (610) and Alex Horton (565) was Boone’s best in qualifying. Wilson was led by Aidan Dsouza (589) and Matt Bortz (586).
