Kutztown track and field opens renovated stadium
The Kutztown Area High School stadium renovation project is complete and open for competition.
The Cougars track and field teams became the first team to enjoy the accommodations last week when they hosted Oley Valley on March 27.
The boys team was a winner, 77-68 over the Lynx while the Oley girls won 8268.
Owen Fenerty swept the sprints and figured in on two relay-race wins by the Cougars in their meet with the Lynx.
Fenerty clocked an 11.14 in the 100 and 25.50 in the 200 while running legs of Kutztown’s victorious 4x100 and 4x400. Ivan Fegley contributed a pair of firsts for the Cougars in the triple jump (19-4) and high jump (5-10).
In the girls’ meet, Shannon Lackey, Rebecca Snyder, Marley Turbett and RayJeana Shultz each won two races to key the Lynx’ victory over the Cougars.
Lackey swept the sprints, running the 100 in 13.31 and the 200 in 28:32. Snyder won the 800 (2:31) and 1,600 (5:15.10), Turbett took the hurdles in 17.08 (100 lows) and 52.75 (300 intermediates) and Shultz headed the shot put (29-2 ¾) and discus (81-5). Skylar Miller was a two-event winner for Kutztown in the high jump (4-10) and triple jump (33-5) while Carlee Lasko (3,200, 13:20) and Madison Wolf (pole vault, 7-6) were other winning Cougars.
Softball
KUTZTOWN 9, MUHLENBERG
0» Katie Calkins pitched a no-hitter and Jill Siefert went 2-for-3 with two home runs and four RBI as Kutztown’s softball team opened the season March 26 with a 9-0 win over Muhlenberg.
Calkins struck out nine and aided her shutdown pitching by hitting a double. Kylie Balthaser had a double, a run scored and two RBI, and Emily Maddock also doubled.
Baseball
KUTZTOWN 10, PEQUEA VALLEY 4 » At Kinzers March 29, Lucas Floyd and Lewis Weaver sparked the Cougars at the plate as they opened their season with a victory over the Braves.
Floyd was 2-for-4 with three runs. Weaver had a double, two walks, two runs and an RBI.
Boys tennis
KUTZTOWN 6, HAMBURG 1
» At Kutztown March 27, the Cougars spotted the Hawks their lone point at first singles before sweeping the rest of the ladder to win their Berks Conference match.
Thomas Siefert, Paul Ache and Jacob Heffner all won at singles before figuring in on Kutztown’s points in doubles play. Siefert’s 6-0, 6-1 win at second singles was the Cougars’ best individual effort.
