Kutztown grad Stump an infield fixture for West Chester

COURTNEY STUMP (KUTZTOWN) » The 5-foot-5 sophomore infielder has played in all 23 games with 22 starts for the West Chester softball team, the Golden Rams 15-8 after splitting a doublehead­er with Shepherd on March 27 in West Chester. Stump had an RBI single in the first inning in a 6-0 victory in the first game. She’s hitting .203 (13-for-64) with a double, four runs scored and four runs batted in. In the field, Stump has made seven errors on 88 chances (.920) playing both third base and shortstop. RENEE WALL (BRANDYWINE HEIGHTS) » The freshman hit a three-run home run in her first at-bat to help the Indiana softball team kick off its season with a 10-1 victory over Salem Internatio­nal on March 9 in Salem, Va. The infielder leads the Crimson Hawks in hitting with a .355 average (11-for-31) with three doubles, two home runs, four runs scored and 13 runs batted in. Indiana is 6-6 after defeating Northweste­rn Ohio 4-3 and 11-5 on March 17 in Clermont, Fla. Wall was 4-for-7 with a double, homer and four RBIs in the two games.

RYAN SMITH (HAMBURG) » The 6-foot-3 sophomore took medalist honors to help the California men’s golf team kick off the spring season by capturing the team title at the Coaches Invitation­al Classic on March 26-27 in Crofton, Md. The Vulcans took the title by eight strokes led by Smith who had rounds of 75, 75 and 73 for a seven-over-par total of 223 to finish two strokes ahead in the 71 player field. He played in four events during the fall season and had a scoring average of 78.8. REBECCA BLATT (HAMBURG) » The sophomore showed off her power to lead the Millersvil­le softball team to a doublehead­er sweep of Bowie State March 26 in Bowie, Md. Blatt had two home runs and was 5-for-8 with six runs batted in as Millersvil­le won 17-3 and 16-1. She’s hitting .322 (19-for-59) with five doubles, five home runs and a team-high 26 runs batted in. At shortstop, she’s made seven errors on 74 chances (.905) with four double plays. Blatt hit .228 with two home runs in 47 games as a freshman.

MARYBETH STONE (GOV. MIFFLIN) » This is Marybeth Stone’s first season playing for the 10-2 Haverford softball team but the sophomore first baseman is off to a big start.

Stone, a transfer from Middlebury College and a Governor Mifflin graduate, is hitting .500 (19for-38) with five doubles, 10 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. In a three-game stretch in Kissimmee, Fla., on March 13-15, the lefthanded hitter was 9-for-11 with four runs scored and six runs batted in as The Fords defeated St. Norbert’s (11-7), Susquehann­a (4-2) and Wheaton (13-2). Haverford opened play in the Centennial Conference with a doublehead­er sweep of Muhlenberg (75, 8-4) on March 27 in Allentown and Stone had three hits in five at-bats plus two walks with two runs scored and an RBI.

Besides her hitting, Stone is a solid defender at first base making just three errors on 74 chances (.959).

Stone played in 30 games for Middlebury as a freshman and hit .405.

BROOKE WENSEL (BERKS CATHOLIC) » The junior was named Patriot League Player of the Week on March 27 for her stellar play with the 4-22 Lafayette softball team. The Bechtelsvi­lle native was named after she hit .833 (5for-6) with two home runs and four runs batted in as the Leopards defeated Holy Cross 13-4 and then lost 8-0 and 12-3 to the Crusaders. Wensel is hitting .278 (20-for-72) with three doubles, a triple, three home runs, 15 runs scored and seven runs batted in. In an 8-5 victory over St. Peter’s on March 29, she had a home run and single with four RBIs.
