Time to take the country back from the far right and far left

- Jeff Edelstein Jeff Edelstein is a staff columnist for The Trentonian.

My fellow Americans (who aren’t mouthbreathing morons who are aligned with either the extreme far-right or the extreme far-left, or, if you prefer, the extreme far-left or the extreme far-right):

We have an opportunity to take this country back for the reasonable. Forget your tired, your poor, your huddled masses. Forget the meek shall inherit the Earth. It’s time, instead, for the pragmatic among us to rule the day. Level-headed Americans, unite!

And really: This is a call to the would-be Democrats and would-be Republicans among us. It’s time to stop pandering to the crazies on either side of the divide.

Do you think the coronavirus is a hoax and Bill Gates is harvesting your DNA? You’re not welcome. Do you think white people are special? Not welcome. Do you think January 6 was not an insurrection? You’re not welcome.

Do you think we should become a socialist country? You’re not welcome. Do you think America sucks? You’re not welcome. Do you think race and gender and any other number of things outside our control should trump hard work? Not welcome.

I can go on here and aggravate large swaths of people reading this, but I’ve probably done my job on that score already. And honestly: If you are peeved by the previous two paragraphs … well, I don’t care.

You’re on the fringes. We’ve all spent enough time pandering to you.

Truth is, the average quoteunquote Democrat has more in common with the average quoteunquote Republican than they do with the radical left. The reverse is also true. And right now, we have a chance to bridge the divide. We have a chance to take the country back from the crazies.

It starts with honesty, honestly. Specifically, Democrats being honest with themselves.

Check this post from the substack The Liberal Patriot titled “Democrats: Go Directly to the Center.”

In it, the author Ruy Teixeira, points to a recent NBC news poll that shows Democrats — well, normal Democrats — need to drop the insane rhetoric from the fringes of the party.

For instance: In the upcoming 2022 congressional elections, the top four attributes that would make someone vote for a candidate is: Fully funding the police, expanding oil and gas production, supporting infrastructure legislation, and supporting President Biden’s plan to lower prescription drugs.

Teixeira rightly points out the top three things are all poison to the far-left. They want to defund the police, they loathe the idea of more gas and oil, and they held up the infrastructure bill in a failed effort to get Build Back Better through.

You want to lose a congressional race as a Democrat? Run against lowering gasoline prices and helping the police.

In short: If you’re a reasonable Democrat you need to break away from the far-left socalled progressives and link up with the Republican Voters Against Trump types and … well gosh, and probably form your own political party.

The Reasonables, let’s call them. They’d never lose another election. Get Duane “The Rock” Johnson” to be the presidential candidate in 2024 — not even kidding, not even by a little bit — and we’re off to the races.

Of course, the odds of this happening are not good, but by golly, it seems to be the best — dare I say only? — way to take this country back from both the AOCs and the Marjorie Taylor Greenes.
