Steel River Playhouse students perform ‘The SpongeBob Musical’

Shows conclude with Family FUNdraiser at The Carousel at Pottstown

-

The students of the Steel River Playhouse Summer Bridge program have been studying and working hard to bring the magic of “The SpongeBob Musical” to the stage. Evening and matinee performances will take place Aug. 19, 20 and 21.

The stakes are higher than ever in this dynamic stage musical, as SpongeBob, Patrick, Sandy, Squidward and all of Bikini Bottom face the total annihilation of their undersea world. Chaos erupts. Lives hang in the balance. And just when all hope seems lost, a most unexpected hero rises up and takes center stage. The power of optimism really can save the world!

The SpongeBob Musical is based on the beloved animated series created by Stephen Hillenburg and features a book by Kyle Jarrow, with original songs by Yolanda Adams, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry of Aerosmith, Sara Bareilles, Jonathan Coulton, Alexander Ebert of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, The Flaming Lips, Lady A, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Panic! At the Disco, Plain White T’s, They Might Be Giants and T.I., and songs by David Bowie, Tom Kenny and Andy Paley. Additional lyrics are by Jonathan Coulton, with additional music by Tom Kitt. The musical production was conceived by Tina Landau.

Students in the Summer Bridge program are between the ages of 13 and 21, and of all genders, races, and all different physical silhouettes.

“The Summer Theater Education Bridge Program meets students where they are in their theater education journey with an intensive rehearsal process that includes learning music, choreography and staging quickly,” said Stacey Michaud, Education Director.

The program includes students who have participated in Steel River’s annual theater education programming which includes classes, performance workshops and summer camps and older students, who are preparing to pursue their theater education studies in college.

“Our director, music director and choreographer all have degrees in their fields and are actively working in their fields,” said Michaud.

In addition, tuition assistance is available.

“No student has ever been turned away because they could not afford to participate in our programming,” said Michaud.

Evening performances will take place on Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m. Matinee performances will take place Aug. 20 and Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $25 for adults, and $20 for students and seniors (65+). Purchase tickets online at https://steelriver. secure.force.com/ticket#/.

After the last performance on Aug. 21, join Steel River Playhouse at The Carousel at Pottstown for a Family FUNdraiser. The community is invited for an evening of fun from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Pay what you decide with a $5 per person or $10 per family suggested donation.
