Cavanna, Muhlenberg run win over Octorara

Gio Cavanna ran for a career-high 220 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 68-yard pass for a TD to lead Muhlenberg to a 25-13 victory over Octorara in a season-opening, non-league game Friday at Atglen.

The win was the Muhls’ second straight — they ended last season with a victory over Reading High — following a 26-game losing streak.

The Braves took a 7-0 lead on a touchdown by Mason Ellingswot­h with 9:03 left in the first quarter, but Cavanna, a senior, quickly answered.

The senior scored on a 75-yard on the Muhls’ first play from scrimmage to cut it to 7-6.

He then put Muhlenberg ahead in the second quarter with a 74-yard touchdown run.

On the first play from scrimmage in the second half, Ulices Ramirez ran 60 yards for a TD to give Muhlenberg a 19-7 lead.

Cavanna’s 68-yard TD reception made it 25-7.

Octorara, which went 8-3 and qualified for the District 3 Class 4A playoffs last season, scored with 37.2 seconds left.

Cavanna, who had just seven carries Friday, came into the game with just 171 career rushing yards.

Drew Fidler, a senior making his first start at quarterbac­k for Muhlenberg, completed 3-of-6 passes for 85 yards and one touchdown with one intercepti­on.

Ramirez finished with 88 yards on six carries.

The Muhls ran for 365 yards on 35 carries and had 450 total yards. FLEETWOOD 58, KUTZTOWN 12 » At Kutztown, Jack Riffle threw for four touchdowns and ran for another to lead Fleetwood by Kutztown in a non-league game.

Mason Musitano had three TD receptions and Ty Wamsher scored two touchdowns for the Tigers in the debut of new head coach Steve Pangburn.

Riffle, a junior making his first starter at quarterbac­k, threw touchdown passes of 7, 33 and 15 yards to Musitano and 65 yards to Wamsher.

He completed 7-of-10 passes for 164 yards and also ran for a 48-yard touchdown.

Musitano had five catches for 91 yards.

Wamsher opened the scoring with a 5-yard run.

Fleetwood also scored on a 79-yard kickoff return by Jason Petion and a 23-yard run by Tristan McFarland.

For Kutztown, Jacob Lafferty threw a 13-yard scoring pass to Ethan Lafferty and Brenden Ackley scored on a 1-yard run. Ackley finished with 91 yards on 14 carries.

The Tigers scored 28 points in the second quarter and led 44-6 at the half. HAMBURG 48, HALIFAX 6 » At Halifax, senior running back Pierce Mason scored three touchdowns and rushed for a team-high 68 yards to lead the Hawks in the non-league game.

Hamburg, in its first game under coach Matt Hoffert, held Halifax to 68 total yards (20 rushing, 48 passing)..

Mason opened up the scoring less than a minute into the game on a 14yard run. Hamburg quarterbac­k Xander Menapace scored a 3-yard run with 8:29 remaining in the first, and the Hawks converted a two-point conversion to make it 15-0.

Hamburg scored two more touchdowns in the first thanks to runs by Mason (3 yards) and Ronnie Parra (7 yards) to take a 29-lead. A 10-yard touchdown run by Mason with 10:36 left in the second would be his third and final.

Halifax scored with 3:51 remaining in the second on a 31-yard pass from Peter Ranck to Teegan Carroll. The Hawks blocked the ensuing extra point to keep the score 36-6.

Tyler Shuey closed out the first-half scoring with a 13-yard touchdown run to give Hamburg a 42-6 lead with 2:01 remaining in the first half,

Menapace picked up his second rushing touchdown with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter, a a 5-yard run to make it 48-6.

Menapace completed 9-of-12 passes for 136 yards and rushed for 19. Cohen Correll led Hamburg in receiving with three catches for 58 yards.

The Hawks had 17 rushing attempts for 111 yards and completed 10 passes for 140 yards. Shuey was 1-of-2 passing for 4 yards throwing.

LOYALSOCK 34, BERKS CATHOLIC 21 » At Forino Sports Complex, Davion Hill had 331 total yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Loyalsock in a non-league game at Forino Sports Complex.

Hill had 227 rushing yards and 94 receiving yards.

He scored on a 71-yard pass from Tyler Gee and on a 14-yard run to give the Lancers a 14-0 lead.

Josiah Jordan got the Saints back it. He scored on a 10-yard pass from Will Hess and returned an intercepti­on 46 yards for a score as Berks Catholic tied it at 14-14.

Gage Patterson gave Loyalsock the lead for good on a 47-yard pass from Gee in the second quarter. Hill then scored on a 2-yard run in the third to make 27-14.

Devin Garcia’s 9-yard TD yard cut the Saints’ deficit to 27-21, but Hill put it away with a 7-yard touchdown run.

GARDEN SPOT 31, CONRAD WEISER 6 » At Robesonia, Kye Harding threw for 329 passing yards and three touchdowns as Garden Spot scored the game’s final 31 points to beat Conrad Weiser in a non-league season opener at Robesonia.

Adam Noll hit field goals of 22 and 20 yards to give the Scouts a 6-0 lead in the second quarter.

Harting connected with Zac Nagle on a 13-yard touchdown pass as the Spartans went up 7-6. A 25-yard field goal by Nicklas Gleason gave Garden Spot a 10-6 lead at the half.

In the third quarter, Harding threw a 46-yard TD pass to Blake Weaver and an 87-yard scoring pass to Nagle.

Jadon Burkholder scored on a 3-yard run for Garden Spot in the fourth quarter. CENTRAL DAUPHIN EAST 31, READING HIGH 12 » At Harrisburg, Central Dauphin East scored 24 straight points after Reading High had taken the lead and went on the non-league victory in a game that was called near the end of the third quarter due to lightning.

The game was the first as head coach of the Red Knights for Troy Godinet, a Reading High grad.

The Red Knights took a 6-0 lead on a 34-yard touchdown pass from Amier Burdine to Jahsir Drayton

The Panthers came back to score on a 7-yard run by Nehemiah Ewell to go up 7-0

Reading High answered on a 45-yard TD pass from Burdine to Ruben Rodriguez to make it 12-7 midway through the first quarter..

CD East retook the lead on a 38-yard run from Ewell. The extra point made it 14-12.

Nicolas Bloss hit a 41yard field goal for the Panthers to make it 17-12 at halftime.

Before play was halted in the third quarter, Izayah Hitchcock caught a 14yard TD pass from Demaj Jalloh and the Panthers recovered a blocked put in the end zone.

Burdine finished 8-for-14 passing for 145 yards and two touchdowns with one intercepti­on. He also ran for 94 yards on eight carries.

Drayton had three catches for 72 yards.
