Cam Jones and his Wilson teammates watched helplessly last season when they were dominated by Nick Singleton and Gov. Mifflin in their annual backyard rivalry.

On the return trip Saturday to Mifflin Stadium, the Bulldogs turned the non-league football game into the Cam Jones show. The opening act came quick and the Mustangs never recovered.

Jones returned a punt 56 yards for a touchdown less than three minutes into the game to spark

Wilson to a 32-14 victory over Gov. Mifflin, returning the Gurski-Linn Trophy to West Lawn for the first time since 2019.

“Our philosophy is every time the ball gets back there it’s going to the house no matter what,” Jones said. “As long as the ball gets into my hands I’ve just got to trust my blockers and find my way to the end zone.”

Jones also rushed for 139 yards and two touchdowns, including a 9-yard run later in the first quarter that staked Wilson to an early 14-0 lead.

Jones also ran for a two-point conversion and also caught a pass for 11 yards. In addition, he had a touchdown grab wiped out by one of Wilson’s 16 penalties for 151 yards.

Wilson (5-1) limited Gov. Mifflin (2-4) to 179 yards on offense a year after Singleton — who is now at Penn State — gashed the Wilson defense for 137 yards and three touchdowns on the ground in Gov. Mifflin’s 42-14 victory.

“I thought defensively the staff put a really nice game plan together and we executed it well,” said Wilson coach Doug Dahms. “Offensively, we moved the ball but we shot ourselves in the foot a

lot with some of those penalties.”

Wilson was in control most of the way with Jones scoring his third TD on a 29-yard run and Ben Rada kicking a 36yard field goal on the final play of the first half to give Wilson a 25-7 lead.

Gov. Mifflin’s only touchdown in the first half came on a 22-yard pass from Delsin McNeil to Jackson Parker.

“They’re a very good football team,” said Gov. Mifflin coach Jeff Lang. “They’re big, physical, fast and they’ve got great athletes. I’m proud of our kids, they did battle. They’ve just got more firepower than we’ve got.”

Wilson increased its lead to 32-7 on the opening drive of the second half on a 24-yard TD pass from Tom Hunsicker to Edison Case. Case made five catches for 99 yards.

Wilson finished with 372 yards of offense and had another TD pass called back by a penalty in the fourth quarter.

Gov. Mifflin scored its final touchdown with 16 seconds left on a 2-yard run by Ayden Martin.

That did nothing to calm the celebration by the Bulldogs as they hoisted the bulky GurskiLinn Trophy and posed for photos.

“It feels a lot better this year,” Jones said.
