Longswamp Eagle Scout honored at ceremony
Caleb Moyer conducted his Eagle Project at 19th century cemetery
Brandywine Heights High School senior Caleb Moyer, 18, of Hawk Mountain Council Boy Scout Troop 575 in Longswamp Township, was honored during an Eagle Scout ceremony Sept. 24.
To earn Scouting’s highest award, Caleb had to earn at least 21 merit badges, serve as a leader in his troop, and complete a major community service project.
For his service project, he coordinated with Huff’s Union Church in Hereford Township to remove and replace 12 tombstones at Huff’s Union Church Cemetery. The portion of the cemetery dating back to the 19th century was in need of repair as many of the old tombstones had cracked, fallen apart, become dislodged, or were barely legible. With the help of a crew of more than 20 family, friends, fellow Scouts, Scout leaders, and former Scouts, he completed his project on April 8.
His Eagle Project was dedicated by Huff’s Union Church on May 29 as part of the church Memorial Day remembrance worship service. Caleb wishes to extend his heartfelt gratitude to everyone who helped with and supported his Eagle Project.
Prior to joining Cub Scout Pack 575 in 1st grade, Caleb was a Scout Buddy tagging along to events with his two older brothers for seven years. As a member of Troop 575, he earned 31 merit badges, including two Eagle Palms, and has served in various leadership positions within the Troop including most notably Den Chief for five years helping to lead and guide a young Cub Scout Den from Tiger Cub to Boy Scout.
He also served as Senior Patrol Leader for Troop 575 for the past year. He is an elected member of the Order of the Arrow and attended Hawk Mountain Council’s National Youth Leadership Training Program.
The son of Louise and Brian Moyer, Mertztown, Caleb joins his two older brothers, Jacob and Lucas, who are also Eagle Scouts. Caleb is a member of the National Honor Society and participates in various school, sports, church, 4-H and community activities. He plans to pursue a bachelor’s of science in nursing in college.
