Kutztown snaps 70-game league losing streak

The Cougars defeat Northern Lebanon 34-28 for their first league win since 2009

Kutztown held on to defeat Northern Lebanon 34-28 Friday at Fredericks­burg to snap a 70game league losing streak.

The Cougars hadn’t won a league game since closing the 2009 season with a 21-20 victory over Fleetwood in a Section 2 game in the Inter-County League on Nov. 6.

The Inter-County League became the Berks Football League in 2011. That league merged with the Lancaster-Lebanon League for this season, part of reason being the ability to pair more like-sized schools in divisions.

Dakota Thomas ran for 183 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries for the Cougars (1-3, 2-5), who carried a 27-7 lead into the fourth quarter.

Moises Gonzalez gave Northern Lebanon (2-2, 2-5) a 7-0 lead on an 87-yard punt return in the first quarter.

Kutztown tied on a 1-yard run by quarterbac­k Jacob Lafferty, who set up the drive by making an intercepti­on.

The Cougars took the lead for good in the second quarter when Lafferty threw a 34-yard pass to Ethan Lafferty.

Kutztown the ball at its 13 with 2:02 left in the first half.

Thomas then ran 87 yards for a touchdown on the drive’s first play to give the Cougars a 19-7 lead.

The Vikings received the second-half kickoff, but Thomas forced a fumble that was recovered by the Cougars at the Northern Lebanon 25. That led to a 10yard touchdown run by Brenden Ackley. A two-point conversion run by Thomas made it 27-7.

The Vikings cut it to 27-14 on a 5-yard run by Myles Watson with 11:05 left.

Jacob Lafferty made it 34-14 on a 10-yard run with 6:56 left.

Northern Lebanon scored on a 22-yard pass from Grady Stichler to James Voight, then a 14-yard pass from Stichler to Luke Shaffer with 1:12 left.

Kutztown recovered the onside kick and was able to run out the clock.

The Cougars ran for 362 yards on 57 carries. LAMPETER-STRASBURG 30, BERKS CATHOLIC 7 >> Friday at Lancaster, Berks Catholic struggled to get anything going offensivel­y in losing in a Lancaster-Lebanon League Section 4 game.

The Saints (2-2, 2-5) managed just 118 total yards.

Berks Catholic’s Devin Garcia returned an intercepti­on to the Pioneers’ 11 in the game’s opening minutes, but the Saints ended up turning it over on downs at the 2.

Lampeter-Strasburg (4-0, 6-1) then drove 98 yards, taking the lead on Carson Coleman’s 3-yard run.

Trent Wagner scored on a 1-yard run, a touchdown set up by a 66yard run by Hunter Hildenbran­d, to put the Pioneers up 13-0. They took a 16-0 lead on a 37-yard field goal by Peter Fiorello.

In the third quarter, Hildenbran­d caught a 45-yard pass from Wagner and Coleman scored on a 5-yard run to put L-S up 30-0.

Marvin Armistead scored on an 8-yard run for Berks Catholic in the third quarter.

Trey Dianna’s second touchdown of the game, a 29-yard run, pulled the Scouts (2-2, 3-4) within 14-12 in the third quarter.
