Berks Catholic inducts 19 into its Athletic Hall of Fame

Berks Catholic recently inducted 19 people into its Athletic Hall of Fame.

The honorees were recognized for their athletic excellence and contributi­ons to Central Catholic or Holy Name high schools.

Here are the inductees:

JOANNE ANDREJEWSK­I HEINTZ >> Heintz, a 1966 Central Catholic grad, has been a teacher, studies director, financial administra­tor and principal at Central Catholic during her 38 years in Catholic education. She spent 10 years as the scorekeepe­r for the Central Catholic girls basketball team and is the scorekeepe­r for the Berks Catholic boys basketball team.

DANIELLE KLINE FOWLER >> Fowler, a 1987 Holy Name grad, was a three-year letter winner in cheerleadi­ng. She helped start the Holy Name Youth Football program in 2004 and was its cheerleadi­ng coordinato­r from 2004-11. She was the county cheerleadi­ng commission­er for four years and has coached at LaSalle Academy and Holy Name High in addition to the Holy Name Youth program. She has coordinate­d concession­s for the Holy Name and Berks Catholic booster clubs since 2004 and has served as president of the Berks Catholic Boosters since 2011.

MARIA SERAFIN MCLEROY >> McLeroy, a 1982 Central Catholic grad, was a fouryear letter winner in basketball and softball. She averaged 26 points per game as a senior, when she was the team MVP and an AllBerks

selection. She went to Allentown College on a basketball scholarshi­p.

PETER SHUMAKER >> Shumaker, a 1986 Holy Name grad, was a four-year letter winner in football. As a senior, he ran for 1,326 yards and led the county in scoring with 21 touchdowns. He was named the Inter-County Back of the Year and selected to the Berks/Lancaster All-Star Game.

ANNMARIE RAPINO STUBER >> Stuber, a 1983 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in field hockey, basketball and track and field all four years in high school. She was a member of the team that won Berks and PIAA titles in field hockey in 1981. She went on to play field hockey at Penn State.

LORETTA RAPINO KENNEDY >> Kennedy, a 1984 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in field hockey, basketball and track and field. She was a member of the field hockey team that won county titles in 1981 and 1983 and a PIAA title in 1981. She was an All-Berks pick as a senior. She went on to play field hockey at West Chester for two years.

GREG SHUMAKER >> Shumaker, a 1980 Holy Name grad, lettered in football and basketball. He was a starting defensive back on the 1979 Inter-County League championsh­ip football team. He also was a team captain of the basketball team as a senior. He was awarded the Duke DeLuca Memorial Scholar Athlete Scholarshi­p, which was given to the top studentath­lete in Berks. He played freshmen football at Brown until a broken jaw forced his retirement.

MICHAEL SHUMAKER >> Shumaker, a 1984 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in football, baseball and track and field. He was a tackle and linebacker on football teams that won Inter-County League titles in 1982 and 1983. He was a second-team All-Berks pick at linebacker as a junior and a first-team selection at tackle and linebacker as a senior. He also qualified for the state track meet in the shot put as a senior. He went on to play football at Lafayette, where he was a two-year starter at linebacker.

MARIA WENGYN >> Wengyn, a 1980 Central Catholic grad, played field hockey, basketball and softball. She was named the team MVP in field hockey and basketball. She also was selected to play in the Duke Deluca All-Star Game for basketball as a senior. She went on to play basketball at Allentown College for four seasons.

MEG MCGLINN SHIELDS >> Shields, a 1983 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in field hockey and track and field. She was a member of the field hockey team that won county and PIAA titles in 1981. In track, she qualified for districts three straight years and held the school record in the 800. She went on to play field hockey for four years at Notre Dame.

MIKE MILLER >> Miller, a 1976 Holy Name grad, was a starting guard as a senior on the basketball team that was the section co-champ, but is most known for his successful basketball coaching career. Miller has coached boys basketball at Kutztown and Reading High, where he won four straight Berks titles. Since 2005, he has been the men’s basketball coach at Alvernia University. His teams have won six conference titles and earned six bids to the NCAA Division III Tournament. He has been inducted into the Berks County Chapter of the Pennsylvan­ia State Hall of Fame, the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame and Alvernia University Hall of Fame.

JOHN ZABINSKI >> Zabinski, a 1973 Central Catholic grad, earned 10 varsity letters in high school. He was a three-year starter on offense and defense in football, a two-year starter at forward in basketball and a three-year starter at first base in baseball. In football, he twice was named to the All-Berks and Inter-County League first teams and was part of the Cardinals’ first IC title team. In basketball as a senior, he was part of a team that won Suburban Athletic Conference and PCIAA Allentown Diocesan championsh­ips. In baseball, he was a Suburban Catholic League all-star as a junior and senior. He went on to play football and baseball at Brown.

JOHN MILLER >> Miller, a 1964 Central Catholic grad, participat­ed in football and track and field in high school before embarking on a successful basketball coaching career. He began his head coaching career at Archbishop Ryan, where he coached the boys from 1976-85. He then coached the Monsignor Bonner boys for one season before becoming the women’s basketball coach at La Salle. He led the Explorers for 18 years, compiling a 317-203 record, winning four MAAC titles and earning two NCAA Tournament bids. He then compiled a 259-44 record and won one PIAA title in 10 seasons as the girls coach at Mount Saint Joseph’s Academy. Miller has been inducted into the Lou Cappella Chapter of the Pennsylvan­ia Sports Hall of Fame and the Archbishop Ryan High School for Boys Basketball Hall of Fame.

JOE RAHS >> Rahs, a 1979 Central Catholic grad, was a three-year starter in football and wrestling and earned All-Berks honors as a junior and senior. He went on to be a three-year starter in football at Juniata.

MIKE WUMMER >> Wummer, a 1973 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in football, basketball and track and field. He received the coaches trophy in football and basketball and was the most valuable field athlete in track as a senior. He helped the track team win the Suburban Catholic League and the Pennsylvan­ia Catholic Interschol­astic Athletic Associatio­n state championsh­ips in all four of his years at Holy Name. He went on to play football for four years at West Chester.

MIKE KUMINSKI >> Kuminski, a 1977 Central Catholic grad, played football, basketball and baseball, earning nine varsity letters. He was an All-Berks defensive back as a senior, when the Cardinals won the InterCount­y League championsh­ip. In baseball, he was voted to the Suburban Catholic League second team as a shortstop. He started at shortstop as a freshman at Kutztown University.

JIM O’NEILL >> O’Neill, a 1974 Holy Name grad, played football, basketball and baseball. As a senior in football, he scored 20 touchdowns, including 12 on punt or kickoff returns, and had more than 1,400 yards of total offense. He was a first-team InterCount­y defensive back and second-team Inter-County offensive back. In basketball, he earned three letters. In baseball, he batted over .400 in his junior and senior years and had a 4-1 pitching record.

PHILIP GALLEN >> Gallen, a 1976 Holy Name grad, participat­ed in football and track and field. In football, he was an honorable mention All-Berks pick at center as a junior and a secondteam selection as a senior. The Blue Jays went 21-1-1 during his junior and senior seasons, winning Inter-County titles both years. He went on to be a threeyear starter at center and a two-time All-Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference selection for Mansfield University.

JONATHAN TOBIAS >> Tobias, a 1976 Central Catholic grad, played football and baseball. In football, he was a three-year starter at offensive and defensive guard, and a three-time All-Berks and Inter-County League pick on offense. As a senior he received honorable mention All-State honors. He also was a threeyear starting outfielder in baseball. He went on to become a four-year starter at offensive guard at Muhlenberg College.
